SATURDAY. NOVEMBER 5. 1960 Glubb Discusses Mid-East Problems An emotional drive to “catch up” to the modern world is the main cause of conditions in the Middle East today, ac cording to Lt. Gen. Sir John Bagot Glubb. Glubb, former commander of the Arab Legion and noted authority on the Middle East, traced the historical causes of the present situation, in his talk last night, “The Middle East. Storm Center of the World.” He said "a 400-year cultural lag ex ists in the Asian nations.” In order to achieve equality among nations, the countries of the Middle East believe they must acquire education and industrial ization, Glubb said. They cannot do this without ac cepting “massive assistance from some great power.” he said. This, he said, is ihe wrong method. “The only way we can take the initiative in these times is in the field of ideas,” Glubb said. “If we produce ideas, we can induce peo ple to our side,” he explained. “These ideas must be positive and they must look to the future,” he said. In the past, Glubb said “the West has worked with the people in power, whereas Russia has worked only with those who will be in power in the future.
