STATE COLLEGE PENNSYLVANIA Cards, Solly Deny Report Of Firing PITTSBURGH (iP) Solly He mus ,said yesterday he knew nothing about a report he might be ousted as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. Commenting on a story by Bob Broeg, sports editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Hemus might be replaced by either Leo Durocher or Johnny Keane, pres ently a Redbird coach, Hemus said: "It's news to me. Nobody con nected with the organization has said a word to me about such a possibility." Cards' owner August A. Busch in St. Louis quickly came to Sol ly's defense, declaring rumors He mus is on the way out are "ab solutely not true." Busch said Hemus has done "a wonderful job under the circumstances." -In explaining why Hemus, now in his second year at the Cardi nal helm, might be ousted, Broeg wrote: "Hemus may have fallen vic tim, in part, to his own over optimism. "A hustling, all-out, self-made player, Solly apparently hasn't been able to see himself as a manager, but unfortunately he has oversold his ball club to his bosses and to the public They came to expect too much." The Cards, winners of only 2 of 15 road games, own an 11-15 rec ord and are in sixth place. Remus denied that he oversold the club. "I said the Cardinals were cap able of finishing in the first di vision," he said, "and I still think they will. "I also said any club that is capable of finishing in the first division, can go all the way pro vided it gets the breaks. That's what happened to the Dodgers last year.
