A teaching machine is essen tially a self-testing device, he explained, something like cover ing up the answers in a book and then looking to see if you got them right. "Machine enthusiasts” view them as mechanical tutors which lead a person by the hand through a series of simple questions until he is able to handle more complex concepts easily. All of the devices that have been called “teaching machines" use what can be called the "Soc ratic" method of teaching They present the student with questions and answers, problems to be solved or exercises to be done, Bui, unlike a book of prac fice problems, they provide some type of aulomalic feed back so the student is always aware of his errors and prog ress, Hundleby said. "This looks like the major ad vance in educational psychology in a long time,” Hundleby said. At present n few machines are in use at Harvard, where B F. Skinner started experimenting with them. The teaching machines ditfer from television teaching in three —ways. First, continuous active re sponse is icquired from the stu dent so that he constantly applies each new step. Second, the stu dent is informed immediately whether or not his answer is cor rect Third, the student proceeds at his own rale, repealing les sons as often as necessary. Ac cording to Hundleby, this has a definite advantage over class room instruction where the teacher cannot lake the time to keep explaining a point to a slower student, while holding CLASSIFIEDS FOR SALE ’l'i VOLKSWAGEN deluxV' v-dan.
