March Breaks Boro
Cold Wave Record
Despite a pronounced upward trend in temperature during
the last five days of the month, March 1960 will go into the
i ecord books as the coldest March ever observed in this area.
The temperature averaged 26 degrees during the month
as compared to the normal 36 degrees. The old record of 28
degrees was established in 1888
and was tied in 1896 and again
in 1916.
The warmest March ever noted
in this area occurred in 1945 when
the temperature averaged a mild
49 degrees
March 1960 was also the sixth
snowiest March ever observed in
this area. The total fall was 19.5
Inches as compared to a normal
of 9.1 inches.
Even with its numerous snow
falls, this month fell far short
of the all-time March snowfall
record of 47.5 inches that was
established in 1942. The big
gest snow storm ever seen in
this area occurred March 29-30
of that year when 30.5 inches
fell.
The upper air weather pattern
that became well established in
the second week of February con
tinued to hold sway through most
'of March. This weather regime
kept a continuous flow of cold

BRIDGING THE GAP
.. from components, equipments, and subsystems
to fully integrated, large-scale systems
Air defense missiles, unmanned interceptors, manned
interceptors, early warning aircraft, long-range radar, gap
filler radar, Texas towers, vast communication nets, high
speed computers and advanced information display
devices are a few of the integral parts in an air defense
system. Each of these has its individual operational char
acteristics and it is the responsibility of The MITRE
Corporation to provide the basic system engineering and
design necessary to integrate these many diverse and
complex parts into a mutually compatible, fully
integrated air defense system.

During the last week of March
the upper air pattern began to
shift to a more spring-hke type,
and a definite warming trend
was noted. It is reasonable to as
sume that this trend will con
tinue, and so one of the most
fierce winter seasons in recent
years appears to be over.
