TUESDAY. FEBRUARY 16. 1960 Defeat in Field Costs Thinclads "If we could practice for two weeks in the Navy field house, we could lick Navy any day in the week—and that goes for Michigan, Army or any other team." So spoke Coach Chick Werner despite the fact that his Lion trackmen were defeated, 61. 1 / 2 -45t/3, by the Middies in a triangular track meet at Annapo lis Saturday. Pitt came in third with a score of 19%. Superlative performances by, Dick Engelbrink, Bob Brown and Steve Moorehead were lost in the! shuffle as the Lions could place] only two mew out of a possible 20, in the five field events. "A fieldhouse team will al ways beat a non-fieldhouse team unless they're mis matched." Werner said. "With no place to practice the Penn State broad jumpers had their first actual practice in the meet Saturday." But the lack of a fieldhouse did not affect the Lions in the run ning events, as the trackmen took six firsts and narrowly missed an other as Dick Hambright was barely edged in the 600 by Pitt star Mel Barnwell. Navy's Jim Neal won the 60-yard hurdles, the only other track event of the meet Coach Werner was impressed with Lion sophomore Steve Moorehead's victory in the 1000- yard run. "He's one of the top sophomores in the East," Werner said. Moorehead's winning time was 2:15. Mike Miller, another prom ising soph. was right behind Moorehead with a time of 2,16.2. State's Dave LaFfoff finished fourth. Nittany captain Dick Engelbrink set a new fieldhouse record while winning the 2-mile run with a time of 919.9. Herm Weber of Penn State placed fourth with a clocking of 9:49.2. Engelbrink made it a double win as he also took a first in the mile, finishing ahead of Pitt's Ron Rush. Weber was third. Penn State's Bobby Brown tied a fieldhouse record, capturing the 60-yard with a clocking of 6.2. Paul Mankowich of Navy was sec ond State's mile relay team of liambright, Don Davies, Pal Cunningham and Bob Szeyller breezed to a victory in 3:20.4. Cunningham was a last minute replacement for George Metz ger, who could not compete be cause of illness.. Mike Miller, Fred Larson, George Jones arid Steve Moore head carried the baton in the 2- mile relay, capturing the event in 7.55.3. Navy finished second in both the mile and 2-mile relays. The Nittanies' downfall in the field events cost them the meet. The only two Lions to place were Dick Campbell, who tied for sec ond in the high jump with a leap of 6'2", and Dale Peters ,who gar nered a third place tie in the pole vault with a 13-foot effort.
