Indian Librarian Calls

Open stacks help fulfill aj

serving the students well, ac-'
cording to Shiva Narain Ma-j
thur, an Indian librarian. |
"Books fire meant to be used,
not just preserved,” Mathur said.
"It is good,” he added, "it stu

Mathur visited the Fred Lewis
Paiiee Library for two weeks
through the efforts of the Ig

Rajasthan University in Jaipur,
where he supervises technical and
administrative work. When he re
turns to India in March, he will
help train librarians for newly
established village libraries.
"Our province,” Mathur said,
“is not fully developed, so I am
especially interested in starting
a school of library science”
While visiting libraries , - _ . .

he said, “we must use our money
for things more useful to the
whole country, such as industry.”
As soon as possible, however, Ma
thur would like to introduce these
i mechanical aids in India.
In commenting on books. Ma-,
thur said that best selleis are not 1
confined to one country. "Dr.!
Zhivago,’’ for example, has been'
quite popular at his library. ;
Acording lo Maihur, India
uses the colon system, a newer,
"more scientific and analytical
classifying method" developed
by Dr. Ranganathan, an Indian
pioneer in library work. It is
[ more practical because it can
be expanded to meet the needs
! of the native language
| This method solves many of the
i problems encountered when In
jdians use either the Dewey Deci
mal or Library of Congress sys
tems.
“Our purpose is to serve stu
dents well and the colon system
is best for us. It would be too ex
pensive to switch an older library
to it.”
