Brown stated that unless the press lives up to its new re sponsibilities it will find its freedoms more and more limit ed. There is a definite need, he said, for new guideposts in re porting science, "nuts and bolts," suburban news and "big stories." "It is necessary to encourage our staffs to stand off for a long deep look at a big subject," he added. An editor must rely on his jour nalistic instinct and the com munity for which he publishes to determine the balance of light and heavy news, Brown said. "The reader wants information that is carefully selected and intelligent ly edited, and such r information is our primary and indispensable product." Briefly touching on the need for objectivity, Brown said that there is a need for background, analysis and interpretation in 'addition to the stark facts of the news. "The best of American newspapers are learning to do this job pretty well" he said. Twentieth century develop ments have made it impossible for newspapers to be first with the news, and the reader now looks to his newspaper for a fuller explanation of events, ac cording to Brown. Newspapers must do a complete job of in forming the public fully rather than swiftly, he said. "Newspapers aggressively and properly assert the right to scruti nize and report every aspect of human life," Brown said. He asks, however, "why do we then deny the right of others to scrutinize our performance?" This scrutiny, he said, will aid in maintaining Journalistic stand ards and is feared only by the irresponsible members of the pro fession.
