THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, 1959 5 Gymnasts Compete In Pan-Am Tryouts Penn State will be represented by five former, present or future Nittany Lion gymnastic stars in the Pan-American game team tryouts to be held Friday and Saturday at the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, N. Y. The Lion stars will be accompanied by Gene Wettstone, who completed his 20th year as' head coach by winning the NC AA and Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastic Association champion ships. 5 Track Meets Slated for 1959 Five dual meets, two at home,l are slated for Penn State's 1959 cross country team. The Nittany Lion harriers will open with a pair of home meets with Cornell and Pittsburgh, and then will hit the road for contests against Navy, Michigan State and Manhattan. The Lions will be captained by Dick Engelbrink. Penn State won four of five meets last season and placed fifth in the IC4A Championships. Thirty-five gymnasts from all over the country are competing in the team tryouts. The six top all-around competitors will be chosen for the team, which will be coached by Paul Romeo, of Syracuse University. Blonde, crew-cut Karl Schwenz feier, on leave from the U.S. Air Force, will lead the Lion gym nasts in the two-day event. Armando Vega, who ended his gymnastic eligibility this spring, will also compete in the tryouts flying to the events from his California home. Jay Werner, the 1960 co-cap tain elect and NCAA flying rings champion and second-place fin isher in the Eastern all-around competition to Vega, will be the active Lion gymnast entering the event. Freshman sensation Greg Weiss, who has been on campus most of the summer training for the tryouts, will compete along with Tom Seward, a Nittany Lion freshman-to-be. "Dutch" Sykes, professor of physical education, has been named director of in tramural athletics, succeeding Eu gen C. Bischoff, who retired. Sykes has been assistant di rector of the vast intramural pro gram since. 1946. He has been a member of the University's fac ulty since 1935 and served sev eral years as a member of the faculty and as basketball coach at the Dußois campus. He was named an instructor in physical education in 1946, as sistant professor of in 1950, asso ciate professor in 1954, and a full professor in 1957. After graduation from the University, he spent a year in the contract cancellation department of the Westinghouse Elec t r i c Corp. He entered the U.S. Army Infantry in 1946 and served on the Philippine Islands. He later became an educational recondi tioning specialist and was assigned to the Mayo General Hospital, Gailsville, 111. tootball 'Pictorial' Wins Top Honors The University's 1958 football' program today was voted tops in' the country for editorial excel lence in nation-wide competition. Sharing honors with "Beaver Field Pictorial" in the contest's major classification were the football programs of Vanderbilt and„the University of California at Los Angeles. Penn State and UCLA are the first two-time winners in the his tory of the competition. Both were cited in 1955, the first year of competition, and were not eli gible to compete again until 1958. University Grad Given Position In A thletic Dept. Richard A. McDowell Jr. has been named administrative assis tant to the business manager of athletics at the University, effec tive immediately, it was an nounced today. McDowell, a 1955 University graduate, was formerly employed by the Oil City Derrick, daily newspaper. He will assist Edward M. Czekaj, -business manager of athletics and assistant to the con troller with headquarters in the College of Physical Education and Athletics. While an undergraduate he was sports editor of The Daily Colle gian; president - of Sigma Delta Chi, professional journalistic fra ternity; and a member of Parmi Nous, honor society; and Pi Kap pa Phi social fraternity. McDowell became a sports writer for the Oil City Derrick after graduation and served until Decer,nber, 1955, when he entered the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot. After his discharge in March of this year, he returned to the Derrick as news writer. One Losing Season Joe Bedenk, while coaching baseball from 1931 to the present, has had only one losing season.
