PAGE EIGHT Physics Prof Will Test Structure of 'Whiskers' How does the atomic struc ture of a whisker affect its strength? A University profes sor is after the answer. This won't be a beard-growing, contest, however. The "whiskers" In question are metal crystals, and the testing will be conductedi by Dr. Erwin W. Mueller, rel search professor of physics. Under cer t a in conditions, Mueller said, metal crystals grow in the form of fine hairs or needles thus the name "whis kers." They are especially in teresting because these crystals have extraordinary properties, with strength as much as 100 times greater than the same kind of metal produced by con ventional methods. The whiskers and their atomic arrangement will be the subject of a year-long study by Mueller and two graduate assistants. The study will be supported by a research grant of $19,399 from the Wright Air Development Center of the U.S. Air Force. With the University's powerful field ion microscope, researchers will be able to see directly the atoms in the form'of crystal lat tices. The high strength of 1h e FEATHERED MUSICAL. But theoretically, crystals can't be absolutely perfect, Mueller said, and the form of the imper fections and dislocations in the "whiskers" can now only be guessed. The forming of expect ed faulty crystals in the "whis kers" will be the object of this study. - The Wright grant brings to $121,000 the amount available for research in field ion microscopy this summer.
