Coogan, former assistant department director and head of sports publicity, is in charge of a broadened program de- Crystal Lab Given Grant Of $245,023 The Air Research and Develop ment Command of the Air Force ha ,, allocated $245,023 to the Uni versity to support the Groth Insti tute for Chemical and Physical Ci ystallography for a two-year pee iod. The Institute. which is in the' College of Chemistry and Physics.' is under the direction of Dr. Ray Pepinsky, research professor of physics and head of the X-ray and CI yqtil Structures Laboratory. Its purpose is to serve as the world center for revision of the encyclopedia of crystal chem istry and physics. "Chemical Crystallography," issued by the great German crystal chemist, physicist and mineraloaist. Pro fessor Paul Heinrich Ritter von Groth. between 1906 and 1919. The first revision of the encyclo pedia is expected to take at least IO veal s. The first two years will be con cerned almost entirely with data collation. The project has been made possible only by the avail ability of modern high speed data handling machines. Work that for merly would have taken years now can be done in a few hours on present-day computers and other machines. The undertaking is of inter national scope and is entailing the cooperation of crystallo graphers from all parts of the world. At present, Pepinsky is in Eu rope on a Guggenheim Fellowship completing the organization of a European staff and doing research in crystallography. A new setup, called the Depart ment of Publications, has been established under T. Rowland 'Slinglull, of Baltimore, Md., who ,also was named University edi tor. Although relinquishing hi s public information job, Bell will remain an associate professor of journalism and executive di rector of the Penn State Press which he helped to found in 1956. Bell, a University g r a du ate, served as PI director since 1943. Mostly through his work in set ting up an annual newspaper sem inar on the campus, Bell was selected an honorary member of the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors. Coogan, a University grad uate and a former newspaper man, had served as Bell's as sistant since 1943. In 1953, he was cited for "exemplory work" as assistant director and his "wise leadership" of sports. He is also an honorary mem ber of the PSNE. Slingluff is a former member of the foreign section of the U.S. 'department of State and has worked in London, Paris and Washington. He was a continental agent for a London, art galleries 'lnd is author of the novel, "The Sea Between." He is a Stanford University graduate and has re ceived his master's degree from the Sobourne in France. Insurance Plan to Be Continued The student insurance program, offered for the first time last spring, will be continued this year. with coverage from Septem ber, 1958, to September, 1959. Enrollment forms and informa tion on the program were mailed to parents of all students last month. The forms will be accept ed until Sept. 17. Information desks will be maintained in Waring Hall and on the main floor of the Ha zel Union Building Tuesday through Friday. Several thousand dollars have been paid out in claims to in sured students. The claims have included everything from ingrown toenails to appendectomies. The insurance program, under written by the Continental Cas ually Company, covers enrollees 24 hours a day at home, at school or while traveling, including dur ing vacation periods. Students' wives, husbands and children also are eligible for benefits, at extra cost. The program includes three plans. Plan I, which costs $15.75, was most in demand last semes ter, with about 90 per cent of the insured students enrolling in it. Plan II costs $5. It was designed for students already covered by a base family plan. Plan 111 is similar to Plan I, except that it does not provide for coverage af ter the maximum full compensa tion of the basic plan has been paid. It costs $12.75. Former Ed Prof Rejoins Faculty Dr. Andrew V. Kozak, who served as an instructor in educa tion at the University in 1947-48, has been appointed associate pro fessor of education. A 1932 graduate of Susquehanna University, Kozak received his master of science degree from the University of West Virginia and his doctor of education degree from Penn State in 1952. Jackson, dean of the College of Agriculture, has been named to the first Board of Governors of the Agricultural Hall of Fame. He was nominated at a June organizational meeting in Kan sas City, which was attended by approximately 200 farm leaders, educators, clergymen and public officials. The idea for a Hall of Fame to honor agricultural pioneers is reported to have been conceived a few months ago by Howard A. [Cowden, president of the organ ization. Twenty-two states and the Dis trict of Columbia are represented on the Board of Governors. Also nominated to the board were for mer President Harry S. Truman; former Secretaries of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard, Henry A. Wallace and Charles F. Brannon and Secretary of Agriculture Ez ra Taft Benson. Hicks, Jr., assistant professor of poultry science at the University of British Columbia, has been appointed associate pro fessor of poultry husbandry at the University. A native of Paducah, Ky., Dr. Hicks was graduated in 1946 with a bachelor of science degree by the University of Kentucky. He received his master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees from the University of California with a major in genetics. He has been at the University of British Columbia since 1952 where he has conducted research and published papers in the field of poultry genetics. Hicks is a member of the Amer , ican Association for the Advance ment of Science, Genetics Society of Canada, Society of Sigma Xi and the Poultry Science Associa tion. Phone AD 7-7629
