PAGE EIGHT Dinner Will Honor Outstanding Women Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter, former president of the Wo men’s National Press Club, will speak April 13 at the Matrix Table, a dinner held annually to honor outstanding under graduate women. With her husband Mrs. Carpenter covers Washington news for several Texas news papers. She will speak on her! Phi Mu Alpha experiences Approximately 150 coeds have received invitations to the din ner, which is sponsored by Theta Sigma Phi, women’s professional journalism society. Three awards will be pre sented—Quill Girl, Cap Girl and Matrix Girl—to women chosen for activities and service to the University, The meal, scheduled for 6 p.m. in dining room "A” of. the Hetzel Union Building, will be informal and will be served buffet-style for the first time in the event’s 20-year history, according to Jose phine Hough, president of Theta Sigma Phi. Reservations must be made by April 10 at the HUB desk. They cost $2 50 Mrs. Carpenter was elected president of the women's press organization in 1954, She was the first woman to represent the U.S. on a NATO lour of Italy for journalists from the NATO countries. Mrs. Carpenter and her hus ba n d concentrate on covering Capitol Hill, the White House and other government depart ments with a local angle for the Southwest. The winner of the Quill Girl award was elected at the Women’s Student Government Association elections, but has not been an nounced. The other awards are chosen by Theta Sigma Phi. Ex-Professor Named General Electric Officer George Heller, general manager of General Electric Corp., elec tronics division, and a former fac ulty member, has been elected vice president of General Electric. A native of Nanticoke, Wat kins was graduated with honors from Bloomsburg State Teachers College and came to State College in 1920 as principal of the State College elementary schools. He was named instructor in English composition in 1924 and in 1930 became assistant professor Econ Prof Speaks To Rail Executives Dr. Jacob J. Kaufman, associate professor of economics, spoke be fore a group of management ex ecutives of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Monday in New York City. His subject was “The Economic Problems of the Railroad Indus try and Their Impact on Labor Relations.” The talk was spon sored by the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University. He is affiliated with the Masonic chapter at Bellefonte, the commandery at Bellefonte and the council at State College. He is a charter member of the American Legion, Nittany Post 245, State College, and of 40 and 8, and for more than 25 years has been a member of the Alpha Fire Company. Last year he was co chairman of the Alpha Fire Com pany’s Fourth of July celebration and he will serve again this sum mer in that capacity.
