'TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 1958 Lab Studies Electrons in Outer Space The lonosphere Research Lab oratory is measuring the electron density distribution in the upper atmosphere important.in tracking satellites and radio communica tion. . . The research is being carried out under a $66,553 grant for an l_B-month' period from the Na tional Science Foundation for the International Geophysical Year. Dr. Erwin R. Schmerling, assis tant "professor of electrical engi neering_ in charge of the research, and his assistants work with sweep frequency recordings taken from radio communications infor mation gathered at 170 stations throughout the world. Films containing the data from the stations come in 1000-foot rolls, each reprseenting a month’s information. The'data is analyzed by Schmerling and his colleagues and fed to the PENNSTAC digital computer. The mathematical com putations required are so compli cated that it would take an indi vidual years to do some of them that the computer does in min utes. Schmerling says. Mills yesterday pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct, drunkeness and the use of profane language. Paul Kersavage, senior in wood utilization from Blakely, was ar rested at 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the New College Diner by State Col lege police. Kersavage paid a $5 fine and $11.50 in costs.
