McElroy Sees
Defenseßequest
WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (/Pi-
Secretary of Defense Neil H. Me-,
Elroy said today the administra
tion soon will asK for another cx
tra defense appropriation.
It may be as much as $1,700,-
000,000.
McElroy gave that information
to the Senate Defense Prepared
ness subcommittee in a progress
report on efforts to strengthen
America in the space age.
Ke also said, in a discussion of
missiles and space flight, that the
Air Force and the Army are go
ing to be shooting at the moon
sometime and it probably will be
earlier than later.

Cuban Rebels Raid
Bank, Spurn Cash
HAVANA, Feb. 26 UP)— Cuban:
rebels boldly raided the Batista I
government’s National Bank of
Cuba today in their campaign to
ridicule the regime during the na
tional sports festival.
Striking boldly in downtown
Havana, the raiders spurned cash.
But pouches containing thousands
of checks went up in flames. That
will mean a long-time headache
for government agencies and the
business community.
The rebel band escaped cleanly
after completing this effort to
shame the Batista regime.

Eisenhower kept terms of the
agreement a secret. But ob- :
viously it would embrace some
arrangement for the vice presi
dent to shoulder at least part
of the presidential responsibili
ties.
On other major points, Eisen
hower told a news conference:
1. A tax cut is “a possibility if
there is any deepening of the de
pression that requires it.”
But more jobs may open up in
March and "mark the beginning
of the end of this recession." j
And with the government ask- j
ing record sums for such things j
as public works, agriculture
and peacetime defense, "you
have got to try to get some
money in your purse to pay for
bills." So, "certainly you don’t
want to go into a fax cut until
that is necessary to bring about
the upturn."
2. Secretary of Agriculture Ben
son. target of resignation demands
from some Kepublican House
members from the farm belt, is a,
man of dedication, courage andj
intellectual and personal honesty.
Those who are advising he be
'fired, Eisenhower said, “are bad
dy mistaken.”
