PAGE EIG4-iT Johnson To Be Head Of Ed Council Ruth Johnson, junior from .711 t. Jewett, has been elected president of the Education Student Council for the spring and fall semesters, 1958. Miss Johnson was opposed by Gary Young. junior in psychology from Clarion. Completing the slate of new of-1 ficers, the council on Tuesday elected Dorothy Newman, sopho-, more in psychology from Phila delphia, vice president; and Ellen• Butterworth, sophomore from Al lentown, secretary-treasurer. Miss Newman was opposed by Miss Butterworth, who then dropped down to defeat Sandra' Grotsky, junior from Glen Lyon. Council also approved a "big' sister" program being set up by Women's Student Government Association, thus automatically agreeing to take part in the pro gram. Under present plans, each new female student at the Uni versity would be given an upper classw•oman to act as a close friend. The council also will investi gate the possibility of setting •ip a separate "big brother" program for men in the College of Educa tion. If established, such a pro gram would be similar to the WSGA idea, but would be run independently by the council. Kay •Kegcl, junior from Me chanicsburg, and Joyce Levinson, soph Amore from Philadelph'a were appointed co-chairmen of The program. The council also vetoed a pos sible College of Education career day. The action was taken after reports were given from the Col lege of Mineral Industries and Robert G. Bernreuter, assistant to the President in charge of student affairs, indicating that such a pro ject does not accomplish enouglt for the amount of money and time spent on it.
