PAGF SIX Gagers Test Wolf pack Tonight Lions Enter Contest 10-Point Underdogs; Team in Good Shape By VINCE CAROCCI Sports Editor Penn State's untested basketball team opens tls 1957-58 season against North Caro lina State tonight at Raletgh. N.C. with the dismal knowledge that it is down 10 points before the opening whistle sounds. The oddsmakers rate the Wolfpack of Coach Everett Case a 10-point favorite—chief ly because of their reputation as a cage power over the years and their advantage of play ing at home. NC State is always noted for its potency at home. Coach John Egli. who. despite the odds, feels that his Lions will make a baligame of it, will probably go with bis expected starling five of Ted Kubisla (6-4) and Tom Hancock (6-4) at forward; Bob Edwards (6- 5) at center; and co-captains Ron Rainey (6-0) and Steve Baidy (6-0) at guard. This has been Egli's first unit since the team began practice work close to a month ago. There is a possibility, however, that Egli may sta:! his top reserve, sophomore Wallv Colender (6-2), at guard and switch Rainey to one of the forward spots. "I think we’re a little stronger! offensively this year than we were I last year but not as strong de- 1 fensively as yet. “We're pretty fair rebounding and we’re shooting pretty decent ly, too. Our ball handling is not as good yet as I’d like to have it fmaking special reference to the .Lions' fast break) and our de fense should improve as we go along.” Egli said that he did not mind meeting the Wolfpack on their home court but said he wished it came a bit later in the sea son because “our kids gel bet ter as the year goes on." Physically, the Lions are in good shape. Both Edwards and Hancock have completely recover ed from their ankle injuries, al though Edwards is still handi capped with a sore thumb. Egli said that the team is look ing forward to the game and add ed: "I’d like to win this ballgame —just once.” In liis three years as Lion head coach, NC State has always come out the victor.
