PAGE EIGHT May Be Financed Senior Class Gift Altar With An altar that could be lowered through the floor in the Helen Eakin Eisenhower Memorial Chapel may be financed by the Senior class gift of $lO,OOO. Funds for the Chapel are one of five suggestions selected by the Senior Class Advisory Board for the class gift. Dr. Luther H. Harshbarger, University chaplain, said yester day that specific gifts for the chapel might include the elevator altar for the proposed main chapel or stained glass windows for the meditation chapel. The puprose of the movable altar would he to facilitate the presentation of plays, concerts, or television. Tentative plans call lor the' altar to be placed at the front of the chancel with a com-j munion rail for 250 persons sur rounding it. ; To Seal 2000 I The chancel will be as wide as the nave, which will seat about, 2000. The seating arrangement! was designed so that the altar! will serve as the main focal point l of the chapel. Dr. Harshbarger; said. I Seats for a choir of 100 will be; behind the altar. The chancel will also be used to seat 200 additional j Bersons when the nave is filled, 1 ir. Harshbarger Said. Dr. Harshbarger also suggested that the class gift could be desig nated for stained glass windows! in the meditation chapel. Stained! glass for the eight side windows] would cost $2OOO apiece; the main! window in the rear of the chapel would cost $5OOO. Design Being Made Sybil D. Emerson, associate pro fessor of art education, is now working on a design “appropriate to the style of architecture of the I chapel and in abstract” Dr. Harsh- ] barger explained. i Three of the four latest class! gifts have been given to the! chapel. They include an organ end chancel and nave furnishings and total approximately $27,000. There is, however, a possibili ty that the final figure will be somewhat less than Wood's origi nal $33,849,000, since the 35 bud get bills planned for presentation by his committee—of which the University’s may be one—were shaved by a total of $lOO million. The $lOO million over-all cut was made by the committee in an attempt to reduce the $2 billion plus state budget. FOR RENT ROOMS FOR men. All summer sessions.
