Not since the 1941 campaign when the Lions edged Mibhigan, l 14-12, has a Big Ten aggrtgation appeared on the Nittany st roping; grounds. However. The next showing of a Big Ten squad will be like a mere wink of the eye in com parison to the 16-year draught which will end tomorrow. Ohio State will provide the other Big Ten opposition Feb. 2. Illinois will field a (veteran team for its battle with the Liens. Six of the starting positions Coach Pat Patterson's first teaml will be occupied by lettermen. Heading the list of returnees is captain Steve Szabo. Szabo wres tled as the Illini heavyweight last year but he has been moved down to the 177-pound berth this sga son. Last year Szabo lost a 10-4 decision to Bill Oberly, now gone from the Penn State mat scene. Dave Moore. 123. and Harold Brownstein. 167, are two year monogram winners for the ll lini. In the 1955-56 campaign, Moore dropped a 7-1 decision to Sid Nodland while Brownstein was shutout by the now-grad uated Joe Krufka. Norb Sergeant, 130, Bill Muther, 137, and Bill Gabbard, 157, are the other Illini veterans. All three were defeated in last year's 23-3 Lion victory. Sergeant was beaten by John ny Johnston, 8-2; Muther lost to John Pepe, 8-4; and Gabbard was pinned by Earl Poust. - Gabbard, however, may be Major League Baseball News BROOKLYN, Jan. 3 (A')—John ny Podres, 1955 World Series hero who spent the entire 1956 season in the Navy, signed his Brooklyn contract today to become the third Dodger to enter the fold for 1957. No terms were announced but it was believed th e 24-year-old southpaw signed for the same sal ary he was to receive last year, as estimated $15,000. Podres, who has a chronic bad back, was released front service last October because of kis con dition. He entered last March. It is this same back condition that has hampered the young up stater from Withrbee. - N.Y., ever since he came to the Dedgers'in 1953. Other Dodgers . in the fold are pitcher Don Newcombe and cap tain-shortstop Pee Wee Reese. ST. LOUIS, Jan. 3 (ii) Ken Boyer, 25, the cat-quick third baseman of the St. Louis . Card = nals who was the Nati•na League's No. 5 hitter last - year s signed his 1957 contract today, re portedly receiving a whopping pay boost to almost double 'his previous salary. The Cardinals' front office did not disclose the terms but it was reported Boyer signed for around $17,000. In 1955. his first in the big time. Boyer reported ly got $9.000. Waner Stricken By Pneumonia SARASOTA, Fla., Jan. 3 (!P)— Paul Wainer, one time great out fielder and member of the Base ball Hall of Fame, was reported in critical condition today with pneumonia. His wife said he improved some what today but still remains on the critical list at a hospital. He was stricken Sunday night and has been in an oxygen tent off and en since then. It is his second attack of pneu monia in the last five years. Waner, 53, had been active and had been planning to play in an old timers game at St. Petersburg Jan. 19. He is a batting instructor for the Milwaukee Braves farm system. Waner made his name playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates but also played with the old Boston Braves and the New York Yan kees. Johnston's Clutch Layup Beats St. Louis, 82-81 NEW YORK. It will be the second post-season game for both players. Plum played in the East-West Shrine game last Saturday in San Francisco and Mazur parti cipated in the North-South clash Dec. 26 at Miami. All-American guard Sam Val entine, who was slated to play in the Hula Bowl at Hawaii turned down the invitation because of illness. Valentine is suffering from a heavy cold. The seven Nittany players who took part in bowl action all showed up welL Halfback Billy Kane played most of the North- South game on defense while Ma zur played both offense and de fense. Tackle Jack Calderone and center Dan Radakovich both starred for the Blue in its battle with the Gray_ Radakovich played at the linebacker spot for most of the game and was in on,num erous tackles besides knocking down a Cray pass in the end zone. Calderone's offensive play brought raves from the scouts. His blocking was exceptional through , out the game and was instrumen tal in many of the Blue's drives. Valentine and halfback Ray Al i berigi both played the entire ANNUAL WINTER SALE n Y/ P /, MEN'S STORE STATE COLLEGE game on offense for the East team while Plum was used mainly on defense. Valentine, noted for his defensive prowess, was a surprise starter on the offensive team. Alberigi was used as a blocker throughout the contest and car ried the ball only two times for a total of six yards. Although he was a halfback with the Lions, Alberigi was piaced in the full back slot by head Coach Terry Brennan. One highlight of the game was the choosing of Valentine as co captain. Members of the East squad voted for the co-captains the day before the contest. Brennan used Plum for only a short time on offense and in that time the Lion signal-caller drove his team down to the West 14- yard line before the drive stalled. Plum completed four out of four passes during the drive. Coach Rip Engle was assistant Ito Brennan. It was the fourth con secutive year that Engle Has been ,on the Shrine coaching staff.
