The work of a University pro
fessor of physics, the first scien
tist to view atoms through a field
ion microscope, which he de
veloped and perfected, is featured
as the leading article in the De
cember issue of a French scien
tific magazine.
The reproduction of a photo
graph on the cover of the maga
-sine, "Science et Vie," was taken
by Dr. Erwin W. Muller through
his misroscope. The magazine has
a large circulation throughout
Europe..
Dr. Muller has received national
and international recognition for
his accomplishment which was
announced in October. 1955. at the
annual meeting of the Electron
Tvliscroscope Society of America
held" at the University.
Since then he has been invited
to give numerous papers and lec
tures on the subject in this coun
try and abroad.

A graduate in ceramics en
gineering, Dr. Matson later stud
ied anthropology and received his
Ph.D. in ceramic archeology. Dur
ing World War II he was en
gaged in research in the produc
tion of special optical glass used
in the war effort.
Dr. Matson joined the Univer
sity faculty in 1948 as a professor
of ceramics in the College of Min
eral Industries. He became pro
fessor of archeology in the Col
lege of the Liberal Arts in 1953.

Matson to Give
Final Lecture
In LA Series
Dr. Frederick R. Matson, pro
fessor of archeology. will present
the final lecture in the Liberal
Arts Lecture Series at Bp.m.
Tuesday in 121 Sparks.
Dr. .'liaL:on will talk on "The
Past is the Present."
1 Dr. Matson has participated in
archeological projects in the Uni
ted States and abroad. He has
visited Iraq twice, the second
time to secure carbon samples
from excavations. The samples
were tested by the radio-active
carbon method to determine age.
Rockets. as war weapons, were
introduced to the British Army
by Sir William Cosgreve, • who
died in 1828.

A tea will formally open the
School of the Art's exhibition,
"New Painters at Penn State,"
tomorrow afternoon in the Hetzel
Union. Building
