Listen to the whisper of a student, bedridden State Names Speech Prof As Advisor Harold P. Zelko, professor of speech, has been appointed ad viser and consultant on training to the various departments of the Commonwealth. In this capacity, he will help carry out Governor George M. Leader's objective to improve the administration of the various de partments of the state govern ment through increased compe tence by all levels of employes. Main Function Cited One of the main objectives of increasing the training activities will be to improve management and supervision of the many functions of the government. Training is the responsibility of each department, with the Sec retary for Administration, Direc tor of Personnel, and training ad visers helping to analyze training needs, develop programs where needed, and see that such pro grams are carried out. Zelko has been on leave of ab sence from the University on sev eral occasions to direct training activities in federal government departments. Served in Army During World - War U, he was assistant director of training for the Corps of Engineers in the ar my. More recently, he was direc tor of training for the Office of Price Stabilization and also for The Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Treasury Department. These are just two of the nu merous projects sponsored by World University Service, one of the five agencies that will receive funds from this year's Campus Chest solicitations campaign to be held from Monday to Nov. 16. WUS, as it is commonly called, is an international voluntary agency which operates a program of material assistance and inter national education to aid the world university community. Has 4 Sponsors It is a service organization, sponsored by the Hillel Founda tions, National Newman Club Federation, National Student As sociation, and United Student Christian CounciL The initial program of WUS, launched after the First World War, provided relief for univer sities in central and southern Europe. In Europe. where World War II disrupted lives and weakened the physical and moral fibre of in numerous students, WUS offers aid to refugees, provides scholar ships, medicines, and foods, and contributes to the operation of an international center. offering rest cures. Need is Great Throughout Asia, where the need is greatest, WUS has con structed student health centers a n d tuberculosis sanatoriums, stocked libraries and laboratories, established dormitories, and pro vided scholarships and loan funds. It is in Africa that the Univer sity chapter of WUS has shipped books and equipment and provid ed money for a medical scholar ship trust fund. Half the money raised for WUS in this year's Campus Chest cam paign will be donated to the Afri can Medical Scholarship Trust Fund that will be used at the University of Witwatersrand in the Union of South Africa. This is the only university in the Union of South Africa at which native students may study. The present ratio of native doc tors to population has been termed "drastic." There i-- one native doc tor available for every 32,000 people. The other half of the money raised for WUS will be used for educational emergencies. Poster Contest Winners Winners of the poster contest that Campus Chest sponsored were announced at a meeting of the executive committee last night. . Hugh Gibbons of Sigma Alpha Epsilon won the men's division of the contest, and the poster submitted by Delta Delta sorority won in the women's division. - These two roups each will re ceive the equivalent of a $5 con tribution which will be used in determining thhe winners of the sorority and fraternity trophies. Trophies to be Awarded The trophies are presented to the fraternity and sorority who collect the most money per capita. A trophy will also be awarded to the individual solicitors who col lect the most money among inde pendent groups. A poster submitted by Sigma Delta Tau sorority received honor able mention and will be used on the table which will' be set-up in the Hetzle Union Building next week to receive money returns from the solicitations drive. Money Collected to Date Edward Long, tabulations chair man, announced that total contri butions received from alumni dur ing Homecoming Weekend in fra ternity houses and sorority suites amounted to $64. He said that approximately $5O was collected this past weekend in the push cart race sponsored by Town Independent Men for Campus Chest. Gallery Displays Student's Works Original pen and ink drawings and sculpture by Mark Wallace ; graduate student in theatre arts from Bristol, are on exhibition in the Horse Stall Art Gallery at the Langhorne Players Barn in Langhorne, Pa. Sketches of such famous Bucks County sites as the Thompson- Neely House, the William Penn Center, Pennsbury Manor and an 1875 Covered Bridge are included in the collection. The sculpture includes works in driftwood, terracotta and bisle fired clay. Copies of the original prints may be obtained in the Green Room of Schwab Auditorium.
