PAGE EIGHT 13 Attending Seminar On Torpedoes Nine naval officers and four civilian scicntMs are attending a seminar on torpedo engineering sponsored by the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance and the Ordnance Research Laboratory of the Uni versity. The two-weekseminar provides a broad introduction at the grad uate level to torpedo engineering and to the system’s approach for solving complex technical prob lems. It consists of both lectures and practical experience in the ORL laboratories, the Garfield Thomas water tunnel, and the Black Moshannon calibration sta tion. 16 Prepare Material Directed by Arthur T. Thomp son, assistant director of the Lab oratory. 16 specialists are co operating in the preparation and presentation of the material. The Laboratory is the only civilian academic institution in the coun try concerned with the over-all problem of torpedo research and development. 21 Possible Choices The seminar was selected by the participating officers from among 21 possibilities for fulfill ing their annual active duty re quirement. They are temporarily assigned to the University's ROTC unit for the course. Most of them are ordnance specialists as are the civilian scientists. Last fall the Laboratory offered a pioneering torpedo engineering course for senior and graduate students in the College of En gineering and Architecture. A two-week seminar was conducted last summer.
