WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1956 IM Football Opens By EARL KOHNFELDER Another intramural football season began last night at Bea ver Field. It also ended for four fraternities. Defending c h a rn pion Phi Kappa Sigma made it a very short and unpleasant season for Phi Sigma Delta as it waltzed to a 33-0 verdict in the opener. Sigma Nu defeated Tau Phi Delta, 2-0, on an early safety in the second game. Sigma Alpha Epsilon edged Sigma Phi Alpha 6-3. and in the last game a safety was again the difference as Sigma Pi nipped Beaver House, 2-0. PHI SIGMA DELTA was ren dered completely impotent by the •speedy Phi Kappa Sigma nine, while Guy Tirabassi passed the winners to victory. Tirabassi set up the first touchdown early in the first half when he skirted left end for 50 yards. puttin the ball on the loser's 20 yard I ne. Tirabassi threw dow -and-out to Elmer Strauss on the 10, then rifled a TD pass .to Ca en Pal mier° in the right corn r of the end-zone. Tirabassi adde the ex tra point for a 7-0 lead. MOMENTS later a Ti abassi to Strauss aerial set up t e second score. This time Gip Bon r tallied on a running pass from Tirabassi. Again Strauss had a hand in setting up a score when he inter cepted a pass inside the enemy 30. Lefty Dick Spitko's toss to Pal miero made it 19-0. The fourth COMING DOWN FOR - THE PENN GAME? On the game's first series of downs, Charlie Ruppert faded into his own end-zone in trying to spot a Tau Phi Delta receiver. As he cocked his arm to pass, he slipped and fell upon the grass. He was immediately tagged for the safety. Sigma Nu, nevertheless, domi nated the game's action through out. The sharp passing of Bill' Coale. the shifty running of Dick Rehm. and the nifty pass-snatch ing of Woody Griffith kept Tau Phi Delta in hot water all night. AS THE first half neared the end. Rehm took a punt on his own 30 and threw to Griffith on the, loser's 40. Sigma Nu could not! move the sticks, however, and surrendered possession as the half ended. Tau Phi Delta's chief threat came with four minutes remain ing in the game, but was thwart ed on a fine defensive maneuver. A long Ruppert aerial was batted down in the nick of time by Rehm. A FEW erratic Rupper passes followed and with a minute and a half left. Sigma Nu took over and ate up the clock. Little Jerry Bruce was prac tically the whole show as SAE put Sigma Phi Alpha out of the running. The winners exploded late in the second half for the victory after being held cold in the first fifteen minutes Dick Frederick place-kicked a 13-yard field goal for the losers early in the first half for a 3-0 lead. It was Frederick's deft pass ing that took Sigma Phi Alpha deep into SAE territory. JACK FOREST took Frederick's first heave on the SAE 25 where he was tagged. The play started on the SAE 40. Another pass to Forest put the ball on the 13. SAE's defense stiffened and Fred erick kicked the fielder. The three-pointer loomed larg er and larger until SAE's Bill Myers took a punt on his own 40 and rifled to Bruce, who had shaken himself loose on the enemy's 10. Myers ran to the five, but his team could move no fur ther and Sigma Phi Alpha took over, . BUT AGAIN Brue proved SAE's man of the hour as he intercept-. ed on the 15 and ran to the two. This time his teammates wasted no time as Myers tossed to Dick James for the winning TD. The end for Beaver House came in the last minute of play when a wild center went skipping into the endzone. A Beaver man recovered but was caught behind his goal for a safety and a Sigma Pi tri umph.
