PAGE EIGHT Counseling Service Reduces Violations Counseling by dormitory hostesses and the dean of women's staff has greatly reduced the number of major vio iations tried by Judicial. JoAnn Fulton, Judicial chairman, reports that since the beginning of the fall semester only one major case has been brought before Judicial, the law. enforcing body of the Women's Student Government Association. A major offense involves a•drink ing or morals charge. The counseling plan, inaugur ated by the WSGA Senate last fall, provides for a series of coun seling sessions rather than a for mal accusation and trial by Ju dicial. The penalty for a major offense is a two week's strict campus and an entry on the stu dent's permanent record. "We don't like to give such a punishment, because it doesn't really solve the problem," Miss Fulton said. "A major record will keep a woman from holding of fice on campus, and could hinder her chances of getting a job. We feel that there's usually a reason for the offense, and helping the coed straighten it out is the im portant thing." 'A Great Accomplishment' Discussing the unusual record, Patricia Douthett, past Judicial chairman, said: "I feel that this is a great accomplishment, one which proves the value of the new counseling plan." In spite of the fact that the number of major cases has drop ped to an unprecedented low, Judicial is not on its way to be coming defunct. It still must approve or reject all recommen dations for penalties. All penalties including blackmarks, must be ap proved by Judicial before they .go into effect. May Provide Defense "Although there's rarely any question, and housemothers' rec ommendations usually go through, any woman can appear before Judicial in her own defense," Miss Fulton said. Unusual cases are always asked 'to appear before Judicial, and any woman who feels she has been unjustly penalized can ap pear. This year three women pro tested 1 o'clock removals and one protested a strict weekend cam pus. The 1 o'clock removals were not changed, but Judicial decided that the campus was too strict a penalty. Created on campus in 1923 as a part of the women's student gov ernment, Judicial was designed to replace the women's Tribunal. Originally all underclass women came under its jurisdiction, and were tried by a board of four, ' one senator from each class. Sev eral years later, however, the Freshman Regulations Board was established to try freshman in fractions, and the Judicial board was increased to eight members, all upperclasswomen. Members are chosen each spring by a screening board, and must have a 2.2 average and the ap proval of the WSGA president, Senate and the dean of women. Judicial decides on the penalties for all infractions of WSGA rules, except morals charges, which are handled by the dean of women. No charges or penalties are ever made public. ;...
