Navy Developing]
Missile A-Sub
WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (if)—The. Navy disclosed today
it is developing a new strategic weapon—a nuclear-powered
submarine capable of launching guided missiles.
If Congress approves the plan, the new departure in A
boats will probably be built in the Navy's Mare Island yard
in California.
Will Fire Regulas
Secretary of the Navy Charles
S. Thomas said in a statement the
submarine will be equipped to fire
the Regulas surface-to-surface
missile, which has a range of 300
miles.
Navy officials said it is too early
to say what size and type of mis
siles will be fired from the sub
marine. The United States is in a
race with Russia to develop mis
siles with 1500- and 3000-mile
ranges, both carrying atomic war
heads.
The Navy has been firing short
er-range missiles from submarines
for several years in preparation
for this new phase of push-button
warfare.
West Indies
Radar Chain
Soon Complete
NEW YORK, Feb. 27 (W)—A
far-flung chain for radar "eyes"
for lightning-fast t r ac k i n g of
America's newest supersonic rock
ets and missiles soon will be com
pleted on a string of islands ex
tending more than 2000 miles
from Florida's east coast through
the West Indies, the builders said
today.
Described as "the world's larg
est chain radar tracking system,"
the 21 installations on eight is
lands are being set up at a cost
of about 10 million dollars.
The Reeves Instrument Corp.,
which designed and built the
series, said in a statement that
they are "the first chain radars
capable of long-range continuous
and uninterrupted tracking."
Precise data provided by the
equipment, the company said,
will aid the United States "in the
tense international race to de
velop an effective intercontinen
tal missile and other new super
sonic weapons."

Or:. ally the Navy planned to
build a conventionally powered
sub for use as a missile ship. It
was approved by Congress for the
1956 construction program.
,But the House Armed Services
Committee has now been informed
of the Navy's intention to design
the vessel around an atomic en
gine, which will give it a boost in
speed and far greater cruising
range.
Navy officials said the atomic
power plant will cost consider
ably more than conventional
equipment, and additional money
may have to be diverted from oth
er sources. The service is required
to inform Congress of any inten
tion to modify plans previously
approved by the legislators.
