Navy disclosed today it is developing a new strategic weapon—a nuclear-powered submarine capable of launching guided missiles. If Congress approves the plan, the new departure in A boats will probably be built in the Navy's Mare Island yard in California. Will Fire Regulas Secretary of the Navy Charles S. Thomas said in a statement the submarine will be equipped to fire the Regulas surface-to-surface missile, which has a range of 300 miles. Navy officials said it is too early to say what size and type of mis siles will be fired from the sub marine. The United States is in a race with Russia to develop mis siles with 1500- and 3000-mile ranges, both carrying atomic war heads. The Navy has been firing short er-range missiles from submarines for several years in preparation for this new phase of push-button warfare. West Indies Radar Chain Soon Complete NEW YORK, Feb. 27 (W)—A far-flung chain for radar "eyes" for lightning-fast t r ac k i n g of America's newest supersonic rock ets and missiles soon will be com pleted on a string of islands ex tending more than 2000 miles from Florida's east coast through the West Indies, the builders said today. Described as "the world's larg est chain radar tracking system," the 21 installations on eight is lands are being set up at a cost of about 10 million dollars. The Reeves Instrument Corp., which designed and built the series, said in a statement that they are "the first chain radars capable of long-range continuous and uninterrupted tracking." Precise data provided by the equipment, the company said, will aid the United States "in the tense international race to de velop an effective intercontinen tal missile and other new super sonic weapons." Eyewitness accounts indicated the big plane was crippled, and heading for an emergency land ing when it crashed. A series of explosions ripped it apart and scattered bits of wreck age over a nine-acre area. After hitting the ground it first plough ed into an unoccupied farm dwelling. Flames splashed over the house, an adjoining barn and garage housing two automobiles. All the buildings burned to the ground. Mrs. Madeline Henderson, owner of the property and a widow, is vacationing in Florida. The plane was attached to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near here. Officials there said it took off for the brief test flight at 11:45 a.m., and crashed at 11:55 a.m. on the Henderson farm, situated on the Wilmington Pike in Montgomery County near the Warren County line.
