PAGE EIGHT Reactor (Continued from page one) from the pile. The fourth rod i« used to regulate the rate of' chain reaction when the pile ia operating. The boron in the rods soaks up the particles shot from the pile. When these rods are lifted, the particles begin bombarding each other, starting chain reaction. Cochrane said the reactor will be used primarily for experimen tation by faculty and graduate students after present low-power calibration tests are completed. The reactor can bo used in two ways, Cochrane said. Ma terial can be lowered next to the pile, thus becoming radio active, or the pile can be moved to one end of the pool and placed against a funnel hole. The radiation would then be transmitted to an experimenta tion room by use of a funnel. The reactor was built at an ap proximate cost of $310,000.
