PAGE TEN Panhel Group Coordinates All Sorority Activities Panhellenic Council, composed of two representatives from each sorority, is the functioning group for joint sorority activities. The council serves as the national sororities on campus, vote in council affairs. The Nationil Panhellenic Council. The rushing code, through which the sororities and rushees become acquainted, is formulated by the council. Formal rushing will begin this weekend with registration Friday and Saturday and will continue until Septem ber 27 when the rushees will be ribboned by the sororities from which they have received bids. Bushing Booklets Issued Rushing booklets were sent during the summer to - women who registered for rushing last fall. The booklet has been stream lined to include only the salient facts. It includes the locations of the sororities, explanation of sorority functions, the rushing code, and other pertient informa tion concerning rushing. Informal rushing, for which the sororities make their own schedules, will begin a week after the close of formal rushing. In February another formal rushing will be held for second semester freshmen with an av erage of 2.3 or better under the new grading system. Panhel-IFC Co-Sponsors The Panhellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council co sponsor the annual IFC-Panhel lenic Ball, the IFC-Panhellenic Sing, and, other Greek Week ac tivities. They also sponsor the Starlight dance for the freshmen and new students during Orienta tion Week. The council awards three $75 scholarships to deserving women on campus each year. It presents a scholarship cup each semester to the sorority with the highest scholastic average. Veep WSGA Member The office of council president rotates each year between the 22 member sororities. The presi dent represents sorority women on the All-University Cabinet. New Scholarship Fund Started by Alumnus A scholarship fund for gradua, students in chemistry or chemict engineering has been establisher at the University by Marlin G. Geiger, a graduate of the Univer sity. The fund, established with . grant of approximately $5OOO, will be used for scholarships awarded on an annual basis to first or sec-' and year graduate students who have a record of high scholarships, character, and are in need of fi nancial assistance. The council vice president is an ex-officio member of Women's Student Government Association Senate. Joanne Caruso, Delta Delta Delta, is president of the Pan hellenic Council. Other officers are Barbara Nicholls, Alpha Gam ma Delta, vice president; Nina Messinger, Alpha Xi Delta, treas urer; Patricia Spatz, Chi Omega, correspcinding secretary; and Mary Craig, Phi Mu, recording secretary. Crafts, 28, former 'head resident counselor at Wash ington State College, has been named assistant to the dean of men in charge of Independent affairs. Crafts succeeds James W. In September, 1951, he accepted the post of assistant to the dean of students at BrOwn University, which he held for one year. He is married and the, father of a small girl. He is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, professional education fraternity, and Zeta Psi, social fraternity. William B. Crafts Neui Dean Text Books Interfraternity Group Governs Fratenities Interfraternity Council, governing body for fraternities, is composed of the president of each house, or in case of his absence, a substitute delegate. Each fraternity has one vote on council proceedings. IFC elects its own president, vice president, and secretary treasurer, with the president being a member of All-Univer sity Cabinet.. The president appoints the chairmen of all committees, in cluding Greek Week, scholarship, r u s h i n g, workshops, executive committee, and the board of con-. trol. Executive Committee The executive committee serves as an administrative board, au thorizing all council expenditures not provided for in the budget. The board of • control enforces regulations th e council estab= lishas, determines when a viola tion of these regulations has tak en place, and administers penal ties for violations. A two - -thirds vote of the council is necessary to rescind any action taken by the board of control. IFC meets bi-weekly during the school year at a place and time which are designated by the pres ident. Any fraternity which is ab sent from two consecutive meet ings is fined ten dollars, while any fraternity which is absent from three consecutive meetings or five, meetings during the aca demic year is suspended from the council. Rushing Program IFC also sponsors a rushing program which enables students to visit fraternities in• which they may be interested. SEPTEMBER 14. 1955 Theta Sig Sponsors 3 Events Theta Sigma Phi, women's na tional professional journalism fra ternity, sponsors three events each year—the Matrix Table, a tea for all women journalism ma jors and a tea or breakfast for the wives of those attending the annual Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers' Association Confer ence. Three awards are presented each spring at the Matrix Table, a dinner honoring outstanding campus women. The Quill Girl is elected by women students and chosen from the presidents of Mortar Board, Women's Student Government Association, Wom en's Reereation Association, Pan hellenic Council, Leonides, and Scrolls.. Members of Theta Sigma Phi choose the Cap Girl who is recognized for the most varied activities.
