SIX Nittanies Clout Navy, 9-3; Drapcho Streak' Cut at 26 Behind another strong mound performance by little Eddie Drapcho, the Penn State diamond nine picked up win number eight yesterday at Annapolis, Md., downing the Middies, 9-3. The southpaw hurler ran his scoreless inning streak to 26 before the Midshipmen scored two runs in the bottom of the second. Drapcho’s record now stands at 6-1 for the season. Jim Lockerman, sophomore, who has started in centerfield eight of the Lions’ 12 games, collected four singles in five trips to the plate and tallied a third of the Nittanies’ nine runs Joe Bedenk’s nine connected for 11 base hits while Drapcho was holding the Middies to five. He struck out for four and walked one. Drapcho hit safely twice, while Bob McMullen, Rex Bradley, Ron Weidenhammer, Cookie Tirabassi and Paul Palumbo each connected for a base hit. Weidenhammer, who went one for-three and scored two runs in the Nittanies’ third win on for eign grounds, brought his batting average to a solid .422 to pace the Lions at the plate. In 12 games, Weidenhammer has ham mered out 19 base hits in 43 of ficial trips. Lions Clout Three Five extra-base blows were walloped in the nine-inning slug fest, with three of them going into the Penn State, side of the scorebook. Tirabassi connected for a two run deep left center round-trip per in the ninth, his first of the season. Drapcho accounted for a sixth-inning triple ahead of Pa lumbo’s two-bagger. Palumbo made his second start at first base for the Nittanies. , Following scoreless , first and second innings, the Lions came back to score one in the third and two in the fourth to go ahead of the Middies to stay. Score First on Error The first Penn State run came when Palumbo walked, went to second on Drap cho’s single, and scored on an er ror by Jim Tur cotte. Middie sec ond baseman. Lockerman led off with base hit number four and set the stage for Tirabassi’s two-run cir cuit clout. Use Three Pitchers Navy threw three pitchers against the Nittanies. The trio managed to equal Drapcho s strikeout performance at four, and issued three free passes. Navy’s Jack McMenamin slam med a seventh-inning triple and Bob Heiden drove in the Middies two second-inning scores with a home run. Penn State left nine men on the base paths, and Navy failed to . push across two. The Nittanies return to Beaver Field for a three-game home stand tipped off with Friday and Satur day games with Pitt and a Wednesday contest against Vil lanova. This is Nick Thiel’s 20th year as Penn State lacrosse coach. Twice winner of Man of the Year honors in this sport, Thiel is a former Syracuse University all- American. The game was called at thfe end of seven innings because oi rain. The Bucknell frosh clubbed the offerings of Lion starter Amie Rosenthal all over the field in the second inning as they scored sev en runs on four hits' and three walks. Bob Demster homered with two men on base to bring in the final three runs of the in ning. The Bison hurler, Jerry Reiden over, held the Nittanies to two singles over the first four in nings. However, he was consist 3ntly getting into trouble by is suing free passes to the Lion batsrrian. Frosh Score Eight The Lion frosh finally took ad vantage of Reidenover’s wildness in the home half of the fifth as they scored eight runs on three hits and four walks. John Mc- Mullen started the frame off by drawing a base on balls. Dave Watkins followed suit and Steve Baidy was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out.
