PAGE 'TWENTY-EIGHT Lion Teams Have By HERM WEISKOPF Since Penn State's official entrance into the sports world in 1875 the Lions have been winning at better than a .600 pace in intercollegiate ath letics. Available records for 15 var sity sports at the University show that Penn State teams nave engaged in 4,532 athletic contests winning 2,786, losing 1,605, and tying 141. These statistics include those teams which finished their 1954 sched ules. Penn State teams have been, winning .614 per cent of their games, including ties as losses. The percentage of wins is upped to .635 when ties are excluded. Nittany wrestling teams have the most impressive won and lost record. Since the sport made its debut at the University in 1909, the Lions have picked up 225 wins as against only 53 losses and nine ties. The .784 percentage of vic tories includes ties as losses. Spoidal Has Top Mark Charlie Speidel, Penn State wrestling coach, has accounted for 134 wins, 30 losses, and seven ties —a .775 record. From 1950 to 1954 Speidel's teams won 34 consecu tive matches, finally being stopped at Annapolis by Navy. It Only Ha, '22, '47 Gridders Were Bowl Entries A 14-3 loss to the University of Southern California and 13-13 deadlock with the Mustangs of Southern Methodist. These were the results of the bowl trips made by Penn State football teams since the sport came to the Nittany Vale in 1887. In 1924, under the "old man" of Penn State football, Hugo Bezdek, the Nittany Lions went to the Tournament of Roses and met the Trojans of Southern • Cal in the first game ever to be played in the present bowl at Pasadena. With Franny Rogel and Elwood Petchel leading the 1947 gridders under Bob Higgins, they became the first Penn State eleven to win nine games in one season. It also marked the first unbeaten, un;• tied record since the 1912 eleven won all eight games. Beaten Three Times The '47 gridders earned a trip to the Cotton Bowl after this fabulous season which saw them run roughshod over Washington State (20-6). Bucknell (54-0), Ford ham (75-0), Syracuse (40-0), West Virginia (21-14), Colgate (45-0), Temple (7-0) Navy (20-7), and Pitt (29-0) . . . putting the record for the regular season at 319 point,s for the home forces and 27 IT'S ALWAYS BEEN OUR PLEASURE to serve the students of Pann State the finest food in the most appetising and nourishing way possible. CONGRATULATIONS, PENN STATE THE NITTANY DELL In golf the Lions have won 184, lost 55, and tied six since the•sport swung into action in 1922. The golfers' .730 mark can be attrib uted mainly to coaches R. B. "Pop" Rutherford, who guided the team from 1923 through 1944, and his son Bob, Jr., who took over the helm in 1950 and is the present coach. Soccer Teams Won 65 Straight Soccer coach Bill Jeffrey guided the Lions from 1926 through 1952, leading his squads to 154 wins, 24 losses, and 29 ties. His .744 record was highlighted by a 65- game winning streak that includ ed eight seasons in a row without a loss. The streak was finally end ed in 1941 when Army defeated Penn State at West Point, 1-0. Penn- State's looters have rolled up a .714 log that shows 202 vic tories. Ken Hosterman, who took over Jeffrey's job in 1953, has guided the Lions to 12 wins in 14 contests. The fourth and fifth ranking teams on the won and lost basis are both coached by Chick Wer ner. Cross-country ranks fourth with a .710 slate and .track is next with a .678 record. H. J. "Nate" Cartmell coached the cross-coun try teams from 1922 through 1932, posting .an 18-8 log. He produced IC4A title-Winners in 1928-27-28 and 30. His track squads won 28 of 34 meets from 1923 through 1933. ned Twice . . . for the opposition. Against Doak Walker & Co., the Lions gained the respect of the Southern gridders and fans. Petchel's two touchdown pass es, fine punt .return and general inspirational play made him the game's most recognized player. Rogers 97 yards to make him the game's leading ground gainer; Chuck Drazenovich's rating as the greatest defensive star of the game; Larry Cooney's great de fensive play against Mustang passes; and Welly Triplett scoring a touchdown for the Lions arid preventing the Texans from scor ing at least three—all this made it a great New Year's Day for Penn State in 1948. Fabulous. Season Although the Rose Bowl team of '23 was defeated three times and tied once during regular season play, the fine performances turned in by Bezdek elevens in 1919, 1920 Lions Joined State AA Penn State was admitted to the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Ath letic Association in 1891. PENistYLVANIA Won at .600 Clip Werner has posted a 69-23 card in cross-country and a 50-35 rec ord in track. Last season the out dook track team won the IC4A championships. Hugo Bezdek headed the Lion baseball team when it rolled up 30 straight wins from 1920 to 1921 and, in all, led his teams to 123 wins and 66 losses. Present coach Joe Bedenk, who took overjn 1931, has added 266 victories arid 118 defeats. Penn State's record in baseball is 671-327-10. for a .666 -percentage. Basketball was inaugurated at Penn State in 1897 and since then the Lions have posted 504 wins and 302 losses for a .625 mark. The winningest team in Penn State's court history was the 1951- 52 squad, which had a 20-6 slate. During that season the Lions won 15 in a row before being halted in Philadelphia by Penn, 54-52, despite a last-half rally. In football, Penn State has a .613 record on the basis of 343 wins, 184 setbacks, and 33 ties. Rip Engle took over in 1950 and in five campaigns has turned out 30 *ins in 44 Contests. Penn State's recent surge in gymnastics has pushed the all time mark to 54-38-1 for a .581 mark. Gene Wettstone's teams have won 48 and lost 21 since he took over in 1940. The Lions are currently riding on a 17-meet win ning skein. and 1921 gave the Lions nation wide acclaim that carried over to the '22 season. Quarterbwik Mike Palm, now a restaurant owner in the nation's capitol, scored the Nittany Lions' three points against the Trojans on a 15-yard field goal in the first period. Hockey, which was a varsity sport at the University from 1940 through 1944, has been dropped from the intercollegiate schedule at Penn State. Hockey showcid a 14-11-1 card for its 'four-year ex istence at the University. In 1911 tennis was added to the schedule and since then the Lions have been winning at'a .525 clip. Sherm Fogg took over the Job of coaching in 1947 and has guided the netmen to 48 wins in 88 matches. Boxing was discontinued after the 1954 campaign, but during its 36 years at the University the mittmen won 101, lost 97, and tied 23, for a .457 mark. • From 1934 through 1951 Penn State had teams in fencing. The record for the fencing teams was 36-47. Nick Thiel took over the helm of the Nittany lacrosse squad in 1935 and since that time has com piled a 70-99 log. The all-time la crosse record shows 111 wins, 167 defeats, and five deadlocks—a .392 percentage. Swimming was discontinued af ter the 1951 campaign. From the time it was first held by Penn State until it was dropped, the Nittany swimmers won 31 and lost 62. Penn State's all-time, all•sports record ranks with the best hi the nation and is a vital part of the University's fine all-round record. Nittany Ski Team Had 10 Year History Penn State's skiing team began in 1941 and was discontinued in 1951. The first coach was Max Dercum who held that post for two years when Don King took over. In 1947 the skiing team was named champion of the east but finished 7th in the intercollegiate playoffs. Sherman Fogg was head coach of the team that year. More recently, boxing was dis banded by the University after 36 active years. W. Beaver TUESDAY. FEBRUARY 22. 1954 Hockey Was Once Played At University In its long athletic history, Penn State has embraced many sports, but during the years many were discontinued.. Fencing, swimming, skiing,. ice hockey, and boxing are fine sports dropped because of various riasens. Ice hocke had its origin in 1940 with wield Davis at the coaches post. Ice hockey was popular with student body be cause of the rough and tumble tactics that occur during a con test. All' the intercollegiate con-' tests were held on the tennis courts, which were flooded dur ing the hockey season. In the '4O-'4l season the team turned in a good •recor4, scoring six wins, losth e i three times, and tying one. The following year the record at the end of the season showed seven wins and four losses. In 1944 the record stood at 1-1. James O'Hora became head coach in the following years but ice hockey was dropped in 1949. The team lost the three games played that year. It was dis continued after this. Swimming had, its beginning 1936 under Bob Galbraith. lie was head coach until 1947. Penn State's' overall record was 31 wins and 62 losses. Galbraith's succes sor was Bill Gulteron who com piled a fair record as head coach. Swimming was dropped in 1951 after Penn State absorbed * one of its worst seasons in the tanks. Fencing was popular back in the days of knighthood but -it didn't start at Penn State until 1934. The head coach was Art Meyer who compiled a 13-29 record in his years at the University. Fenc ing was discontinued for the war years and was reinstated in 1947. But it lasted only four. years„, The overall record for its 17-yearf stay was 36 wins and 47 defeats. BACK IN 1855...
