'C'l2 - -'' •". - • ''''''i' 1 74 0 Lions Move To Easy 84-64 Win By DICK IvIcDOWELL Led by center Jesse Arnelle and forward Jim Blocker, Penn State's super-charged basketball team swept to its eighth win of the season Sat urday night, defeating a scrap py Navy quintet, 84-64, before the largest crowd of the year at Rec Arnelle and Blocker com bined for 44 points as' the Lions, displaying a superior scoring punch and a tight defense, ran away from their 40th straight opponent at Rec Hall. The Lion center tossed in 29 markers and Blocker—who played a brilliant defensive game—scored 15 points in his best sins:Fie night of the sea- SOll. Lead Early The Lions opened fast and piled up a quick lead on the Middies. Arnelle, Ron Weidenhammer, ancl . Bob Hoffman spurred an early scoring burst ; and it wasn't until after five minutes had elapsed that guard L ar r y Wigley con nected for the first Navy score.' The Nittanies could do no wrong for the first 10 minutes and led 1 28-14 at the mid-point of the half. I Navy finally began to move in the late minutes of the half and closed the gap to 40-30 at the in termission. Then in the third period, Block er joined Arnelle in the scoring parade. The 6-4 senior, who hadn't been able to find himself this year after an explosive finish last sea son, pushed in four field goals and tossed in seven foul points, and hounded the backboards as the Lion passers boosted their lead to as high as 30 points late in the half. Lions Control Boards Utilizing an effective fast break game and control of the back boards, John Egli's cr e w was never outdone until the closing minutes when the Middies, ap parently refusing to admit defeat, suddenly exploded for 16 straight points to narrow the final count to 20 points, 84-64. The Lions outscored Navy 58-42 from the field and added 26 points from the foul line in 37 attempts. Navy hit on 22 of 27 charity at tempts. • The Lions play their last home game until Feb. 5 Wednesday night when they battle Syracuse in the first of a home-and-home series. The frosh had to put on a fast second half scoring splurge to turn back the all-stars, who trailed by two points at half time, 32-30. The freshman cagers held their opponents to only three field goals in the fin al half, while they nicked up six. The first goal of the contest was scored with five minutes elapsed when Steve Baidy, high man for the night with 13 points, pushed in a one-hander from the foul line. From there on the frosh led until with 5:15 left to play in the first half the all-stars pushed ahead by one point but fell behind a moment later on a field goal by Don Davis. The all-stars, led by Sherry and Billy Kane, went ahead again at the one minute mark but were foiled once more by the frosh. From this point the men of coach Don. Certain Etcheverry Will Return lONTREAL, Jan. 1G (JP)—Vic Obeck, vice president of the Mon treal Allouettes, said today he is convinced that Sam Etcheverry will be bacl , : with the Big Four club next season because "we are on solid ground legally and will stand behind him." Etcheverry, the Alouettes' top quarterback, caused quite a furor by signing with the Chicago Card inals of the National Football League, then reversing his field and signing with Montreal. Etcheverry's new contract with the Allouettes is for two years, which means the club has already taken up his option for 1956. Boston University will oppose Penn State for the third time in the 1955 football opener at State College, Pa. Decisions In Opening Match Victory Penn State opened its 1955 wrestling campaign Saturday against Cornell by winning five of eight matches and scoring a draw in the 123-pound class to defeat a stubborn Big Red squad, 17-10. The Lions' captain Bob Homan, John Pepe, Dave Adams, Joe Krufka, and Bill Oberly won on decisions while light , . weight Sid Nodland scored the lone draw. Bob Lynch, Cornell, decisioned Bill Shawley, 3-1, at 157 pounds. At the 167-pound weight the Lions' Bob Snyder lost' to Berkeley Briggs by forfeit at 3:53 when Snyder suffered a rib injury. The only draw of the evening came when Nodland, 1952 Nation al AAU Champion, lost a 3-0 point-lead to Ernie Boda. JNodland first won a takedown arid a pre -0.-cament to net three quick points. Near the end of the final period, Nodland held a 3-1 lead only to lose two points and a victory when Boda caught him, in a near fall for two points. Captain Homan chalked up his 21st dual meet win with a 3-0 decision over Bill Jamison at 130 pounds. Sophomores Pepe (137) and Adams (147) both won deci sions. Pepe defeated Cornell's Chuck Gratto 2-0 while Adams, who was also wrestling his first varsity match, defeated Cornell's Roger Judd, 7-3. Both losses by Cornell's wrestlers were their -econd of the current season. After winning three of the first matches, the *Lions dropped the next two weights.
