PAGE SIX Lio::!.--s, Red Raiders Will Play Tonight Unbeaten Colgate University, the last team to top a Penn State club at Rec makes its annual appearance tonight in a game that hints to be the toughest home test to date for John Egli's Lions. Game time is set for 8 p.m. following a preliminary contest between the Lion fresh man team and the JayVee squad. Coach Don Swegan's yearlings will be making their sec ond appearance against the reserves. They won the first contest, 64-55. The Red Raiders, led by 6-4 Jack Nichols, move into Lion country With three straight victories behind them, and will be out to stop a Penn State home winning streak that began after they beat the Lions 55-52 in 1951. Since that game the Lions have accumulated 36 con secutive wins on the friendly Rec Hall boards Nichols, sophomore pivot man from Pittsburgh, and veteran for ward Bill Willgohs, have been the main factors behind Colgate vic tories over Hartwick, Bucknell, and Cornell. Co-captains Frank Patterson and Bill Johnson, and veteran Bob Kordish have furn ished the remainder of the bul wark of coach Howard Hartman's attack. Patterson and Johnson are guards and Kordish handles the other forward duties. Lions Hold Series Edge As usual, plenty of action is ex pected in the traditional battle. Last season the two teams split a pair of contests, and in the entire series, Penn State holds a slim 19-18 edge in games won. The Raiders' 72-53 upset win against Cornell on the Cornell court indicates that Hartman has an abundance of strength this sea son and will probably be the best Egli's quintet has faced in its three home appearances. However, the Lions, who won their second of the season Satur day, have indicated strongly that they are going to be tough pick ings for anybody this season. Jesse Arnelle appears to be in stride, Bob Hoffman continues his consistent point getting, and the Lion stepped-up offense, ragged in the early moments of the sea son, is proving successful. Averaging 83 Points In three games the Nittanies have scored 249 points for an 83 point average, almost 14 points better than the 69.3 record set last year. Arnelle, Hoffman, and Ron Weidenhammer, Egli's three top scorers, and Earl Fields will prob ably get the starting assignments in four spots tonight. The fifth position could be filled by one of four men. Jim Blocker,. Joe Hart nett, Bob Rohland, or Bob Ram sey may get the call. All four have been in the starting lineup at least once and will probably be used extensively tonight. The game is the second of four home stands scheduled this week. Gettysburg and Rutgers will meet the Lions at Rec Hall Friday and Saturday. This winter local fans, who will be keeping a close watch on Penn State's position in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrest ling Association (EIWA) 'race, will notice that the Lion wrest lers will be competing under two new rule changes. Although two rule changes have been made, only one of the two will apply to the Lions during their regular season in matches against Eastern teams and in the EIWA tourney to be held at Rec Hall, The second rule change, al though it will not be used in the dual meets or Eastern tourney, will be used if and when the Lions enter the Natioi4al Collegiate Ath letic- Associations' (NCAA) annual ,tournament. Last year two points were awarded to a wrestler if he earned more than one minute of "riding time" (the number of minutes a man is in the position of advan tage) over his opponent. If both men earned riding time then the lesser time was subtracted from• the larger time; if the time ex ceeded one minute the wrestler earned two points. This year the same procedure will be followed but only one point will be awarded to the man with one or more minutes of time advantage. In 'Fall' Category The second rule change, which will be used only in the NCAA tourney, will set up another posi tion to be included in_the "fall" category. In the past a wrestler could earn one point for gaining a pre dicament or two points for a near fall. These points are totaled to determine the winner of the spe cific weight-class match. In the Nationals this year, how ever, a near, near fall will be awarded with a value of three points to the individual match score. Gasoline suppliers report they have removed subsidies in so-called "price war" areas in the state of Pennsylvania, and prices were back to their local normals by the past weekend. Price increases ranging up to 5c per gallon were report ed for the Tyrone-Altoona area and up to. 4c per gallon in the Harrisburg direction. The State College area, which has had a normal wholesale price all along, re ceived no increase in whole sale price. Reason for Changes Coach Charlie Speidel said the two rule changes were made to align college wrestling in a simi lar vein to the Olympic wrestling which will be held next year. In the Olympic no points are given for riding time. Speidel said the EINVA refused to abolish giv ing points for riding time. He said that the attempt to get time advantage was the "pulse" of col lege wrestling. If the man on the bottom does not get credit for getting "out" and on "top," the match loses its speed and becomes a contest only of muscle similar to the Olympic matches," Speidel said. Speidel said that the three point near ,near fall decision was voted out by the EIWA because it felt the rule would cause con siderable confusion both for the referee, the contestant, and the fans. Attendcance Marks Penn State set two new at tendance marks during the 1954 football season. The home game total of 96,210 topped the previous high for four games; and the 32,- 221 who saw the West Virginia game marked a new single game high. It is generally known that when "warring" dealers cut their prices below the cost of operation, the gas com panies subsidize their dealers in order to keep them in business. Sometimes this condition lasts so long that the consumer looks at the price as a normal one. Then when the gas goes back to the regular market price, it appears as though gasoline lias taken a sharp increase.
