PA "FIGHT President . Hiitio.re: . ./:',::::: ~ty Traditi.tnalHgnile To students here at Penn State the name "Prexy" has become a traditional part of the campus, and is as honored as the man who now holds it. President Milton S. Eisenhower, more familiarly known as "Prexy" to the students, received the title during 'the Honors Day ceremonies on May 2, 1951: But. let us look at the history of the name before we • describe =that ceremony. The title %of "Prexy" was first held officially by Ralph Dorn IHetzel, the tenth president of the University. Twenty years ago, shortly after Dr. Hetzel became president of what was then the IPennsylvania State College, • a student delegation escorted .him from his office to Schwab Audi torium, where he was dubbed "Prexy" in a formal ceremony. Dr. Hetzel revered that, honor until his death on Oct. 3, 1947, and it has been said by many that he liked it better than any honor ary degree he ever received. A Daily Collegian editorial which appeared on July. 1, 1950, the day President Eisenhower was named president, said, "Because Dr. Hetzel . . . regarded students as something more than just pu pils going through a four-year production mill, the title of Prexy was bestowed upon him by the students." While he was president, Dr. Hetzel maintained an open-door policy, never refusing admission to those who wished .to see him. He once said that as long as he had the time and strength to con tinue he wouldn't refuse anyone who wanted to see him. At Kansas State College the students called President Eisen hower- "Prexy Milton." Because of his untiring efforts on behalf of the students, he was given the honored name of "Prexy" by' the student body at Penn State also. In presenting the award to Pres ident Eisenhower in 1951, Robert Davis, All-University president, said, "It has become quite obvious that the door to the President's of fice swings on well-oiled hinges. It is open and accessible to all- stu dents—as much as possible dur ing the day and often many hours at night." COLLEGE: ' PENNSYLVANIA hois (Continued from page one) have to appear in the publication. Approximately 250 paid publi cations must be received in order for the publiCation to meet pub lication and mailing expenses, Austin said. Promote, Activities "The profits from the publica tion are, used by Sigma Delta Chi, national men's journalism frat ernity, to promote the annual Gridiron Banquet'• in the spring and other activities of the chap ter," Austin said: Richard McDowell, president of the group, said "Who's in the News at Penn State," was started at the suggeStion of the late Ar thtir R.. Warnock, then Dean of Men at the University, in 1946. Supplement 'Who's Who' Warnock encouraged starting the publication because of the large number of student leaders who deserve to be honored,. Mc- Dowell explained. He said - War nock maintained - more than the dozen or so formerly picked from the University were deserving of being included in an honorary di rectory, and thus urged that a campus booklet be printed to supplement "Who's Who in Amer ican Colleges and Universities." "It is definitely an honor to be selected," McDowell said. "To be one• of 470 students in a univer sity enrollment of 12,000—singled out for campus leadership—cer tainly is an honor." 175 Applications 'McDowell explained that., al though 175 applications have been returned, 35 of those are "gratis." Members of Sigma Delta Chi and Theta Sigma Phi, women's pro fessional journalism h o n or a r y fraternity, as well as members of the selections committee for the booklet do not pay to have their names included. In past years almost all students selected for the booklet returned their applications. In 1951, 420 nominated were included. The 1952• totals were 418 of approxi mately 450. Figures were not available for the 1953 record. Radio Guild to Meet The Penn State Radio Guild will ,meet at 7:30 tonight in 312 Sparks to ' discuss radio continu ity.
