Brownell today an nounced a sweeping roundup of 11 leaders of the Puerto Rican Nationalist party on of seditious conspiracy to overthrow the-United States government. It was not immediately disclosed whether the arrests were aimed at nipping a new outburst of ter rorism and . violence by Puerto Rican extremists, such as the bloody shooting affray in the House of Representatives last March 1. Federal Bureau of Investiga tions Chief J. Edgar Hoover said the party, founded in 1922, has a history “filled with violence.” Conviction on the seditious con spiracy charge would involve pos sible maximum sentences of six years in prison or $5OOO fine, or both. Six of the suspects were seized in Chicago, four in New York City, and one in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. In addition, the Justice Depart ment clamped down “detainers”, on six other Nationalists, includ ing four held in jail here on charges of shooting five Congress members in the House last March. Following Brownell’s "announce ment here, U.S. Atty. J. Edward Lumbard said in New York a fed eral grand jury today returned in dictments against the 17 arrested or detained Puerto Ricans. The French hurriedly reorgan ized their bulwarks and. shortened defense lines to meet the growing threats to their vital northern In dochina stronghold. As tanks, armored cars, and planes furnished protective cover, the French evacuated and dyna mited the posts at Trannhe and Doaithon, only about 60 miles southeast of Hanoi. The posts, six miles southeast of Thai Binh, a big marketing center, had been subjected to constant' encircling maneuvers and night attacks. The French said the posts were “no longer useful” for defending Thai Binh. The garrisons of Vietnamese bumped into a rebel ambush as they were being pulled back to Hanoi. French Sent to GENEVA, May 26 (JP) —The French ordered a high military com mander from Indochina to Geneva today as a showdown neared in the prolonged talks to end seven and one-half years of hostilities. The French commander was called to the scene to sit down with an opposite number in the Communist-led Vietminh regime and draw cease-fire lines should the Indochina conference adopt new proposals advanced by British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden. This development capped a one day pause in the Indochina de bate which these other signs of an/ approaching test: 1.
