Rained Out, • Play Lafayette Today Seek 3d Win After 4th Game Is Canceled By HERM WEISICOPF Weather perinitting, Lafay ette's District Two baseball champions will battle the Lions today, starting at 2 p.m. on the ,Beaver Field diamond. WDFM will carry a play-by play account of the game. Air time is 3:15, with a pre-game show be ginning at 3 p.m. " At this stage in the season it is doubtful if Penn State Coach Joe Bedenk and the great poet Longfellow agree on the merits of rain. Longfellow once wrote, "How beautiful is the rain." Fourth Cancelation Yesterday's rain washed an other game off the Nittany sched ule—the fourth straight cancela tion. Bedenk had been looking forward to see his team in action after three games were rained out last weekend. However, the wea therman: thought otherwise and yesterday's game with Western Maryland went "down the drain." Garland Gingerich, who was to have made his initial appearance of the season for the Lions against Western Maryland, will be ready for action today. Bedenk can also call on his other two aces—Keith Vesling and Dave Lucas. The lat ter duo pitched the Bedenkmen .to wins over West Virginia in the only• two encounters the Lions have had so far this year. Lafayette Hurlers Set Lafayette will also have three of its top pitchers on hand for the battle. Ron Owen, whom Bedenk considers to be "the top college pitcher in the nation," will prob ably start for the Leopards. The talented southpaw posted a 12-1 record last season. Dick Somers and Karl Dutt will be ready to take the mound if needed. Last year the Leopards finished third in ~the College World Ser ies. Lafayette got off to a good start this season, but NYU and Army handed the Leopards one run setbacks this week. NYU bat tled back from a 6-1 deficit Tues day to nip Lafayette 7-6 and al though Army was limited to four hits, the Cadets won 3-2. Fielding Last Games The Leopards received good pitching from Owen and Somers in the two losses. Fielding was the Leopards' do wnf a/ I—they committed 13 miscues afield in the two games. Then too, the powerful Lafayette hitting attack was held at bay—the Leopards picked up only ten hits. Firstbaseman Bill Hogarty and leftfielder George Watts are La fayette's two big offensive guns. Both are long-ball hitters with good averages. The Lions' next game is Mon day with Dickinson at Carlisle. "ROSE MARIE" in Cinema Scope Ann.
