The Seminoles of Florida State will be the big representatives
from the southeast, while UCLA, Southern Cal, and California are
regarded as the strong far west entries.
The Seminoles were two-time champs before the Staters snapped
their streak last year.
Syracuse and Temple are ranked behind the Lions as the strong
Eastern entries. The Orange came
in third last year.

Six Lion Seniors Entered
Six of the Penn State entries
will' be making their last varsity
appearance. The seniors who made
the. trip are Tony Procopio, Co
caPtains Frank and Al Wick, Bob
Lawrence, John Baffa, and Dick
Spiese
The' mainstays of the all-win
ning- Nittany Lion team* over the
past season, Jan Cronstedt, Karl
Schwenzfeier, Streets Haag, and
Bill Paxton, along with the afore
mentioned Staters, were in top
form before Wednesday's depar
ture.
Cronstedt, Procopio, and Sch
werizfeier, will be shooting for
the all-around title, the goal of
every gymnast.
Defending Champ
Cronstedt is the clef epd i n g
champ in that event. Schwenz
feier and Procopio pla - ced fifth
and sixth respectively last year.
MiChigan State's Carl Rintz, who
took second honors, looms as the
only other outstanding performer
in the versatile event.
Cronstedt will be seeking to

with the all-around crown, and
stands a good chance of copping
honors on the horizontal bar.
Procopio and Schwenzfeier will

Penn State's t r a c k and field
team is preparing for one of the
toughest schedules it has been
given in recent years.
The Lions will open the season
April 16-17 with the Ohio Relays
at Ohio State University. This
meet coupled with the Penn Re
lays the following weekend will
provide the Blue and White thin
clads with some of the toughest
competition they will face during
the campaign.
Traditional rivals Navy, Pitt,
Michigan State,, and Manhattan
—will be encountered on the fol
lowing weekends. The first three
dual meets will be held at the
University and the meet with Jas
pers will take place in New York.
Last year the Lions were de
feated by the Middies in a battle
on the banks of the Severn, 73-58.
Rosey Grier set a new Penn State
mark in the shot put with a heave
of 51'1 1 / 2 ". Grier's record has
since been broken by Charlie
Blockson with a mark of 51' 3 1 / 2 ".
The Spartans whipped the Nit
tanies in an away meet last sea
son, 89-47. This is a meet which
the Lion Coach Chick Werner
says, "bring§ out the best in both
teams." In the final dual meet
of the campaign 1a s t year the
Lions dumped Ohio State, 66 1 / 2 -
55%.
Penn State will close the 1954
season with the IC4A champion
ship battle May 28-29 in New
York City.

adelphia Athletics beat the Pitts
burgh Pirates, 5-3, today in a
flurry of ninth inning activity in

er in 1952 but mostly ineffective
last year, turned in his best per
formance of the spring training
season, pitching seven scoreless
innings for the A's and striking
out six Pirates. The lefthander al

(JP) The Detroit Tigers scored
five runs in the eighth and two
more in the ninth innings today
to edge out the Philadelphia Phil

Young Ted Kazanski led the
Phillies' attack with four hits, in

—Stan Hack's debut as manager
of the Chicago Cubs was marred
today as the Baltimore Orioles
combined a dozen hits with some
shaky fielding by the Bruins for
a 6-1 triumph.

Baltimore's sixth victory in 11
games with the Cubs.
MOBILE, Ala., April 1 (IP)—Big
Don Newcombe allowed only six
hits in seven innings today as the
Brooklyn Dodgers won their sec

waukee Braves 8-7 before an ov
erflow crowd of 9287.
Newcombe let up in the third
inning when Bill Bruton connect
ed for a home run and again •in
the sixth as Milwaukee scored
twice on infield singles by Del
Crandall and Bruton, two walks
and a wild pitch.

The government cleared up the
baseball ticket tax situation to
day and this is what it is likely to
mean to you:
On tickets already bought, you
may get back the 10 per cent tax
reduction if you take the trouble
to go out to the ballpark and get
your tciket stamped. On a $2.40
ticket, you'd get back 20 cents.
You'll pay just as much as you
have been paying for tickets you
buy from now on. The baseball
clubs will pocket the 10 per cent
tax reduction.
