By the Associated Press STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Feb. 24 (W)—Athletic Director E. B. McCoy said today that Penn State 'is interested in member ship in a new • football league or conference but has received no definite invitation. "At Penn State, we believe a league or conference has advan tages which are not oben to an independent," McCoy said. McCoy's statement was re leased amid never reports that a group of important "indepen dent" colleges /may hand to gether to form a league which might be national in,scope. "The grouping is a very at tractive one and one to which Penn State most certainly would give serious consideration," Mc- Coy said, adding: Unfortunately, no invitation has been extended to us and our administratiOn therefore has not been asked to weigh the question." McCoy said that at Penn State it "is our hope that conference sentiment will develop and that Penn State will be considered as a prospective member." "It should be pointed out, however," he added, "that Penn State would be interested only if the conference members sub scribed to a code of standards such as Penn State now adheres to without benefit of such af filiations." He pointed out that Notre Dame THE pmt.'s , COLLEGIAN. STATE cpiA.gqp ; PENNSV-VikillA regularly plays Navy and Pitt and resumes gridiron relations with Army in 1957. Torn Hamilton, athletic director at Pittsburgh, called the proposed conference "a very interesting idea. Pitt wouldn't be adverse to joining such a league." Neither Pitt nor . Notre Dame ever has belonged to a conference. 'The service academies appear to be the key, members. An in formed' source, highly influential in .college athletics, said the con ference "probably will go through if Army and Navy can be brought into it." The source asked that his name be withheld. Col. Earl Blaik, the Ariny coach, said it had not been discussed at West Point. ' At Annapolis, Md., a Naval Academy spokesman said the aca demy is not interested in joining any football conference. The spokesman, who was not identi fied, declared that the academy "is a national institution. It would not be appropriate' for it to be identified with a particular con ference." Other schools figuring in . the original discussions were Penn, Duke and North Carolina. Penn now has chosen the de-emphasized IV - y League which will begin for, mal operation in 1956. Duke and North Carolina joined the Atlan tic Coast Conference. Oklahoma and Tulane also have been mentioned as possible mem bers but neither expressed inter est today. Ron Kurtz, Pitt's undefeated 130-pounder, may mat ' wrestle because of in jury. He is sporting a log, George Beresford is a doubtful starter 'because Coach Rex Peery usually gives the nod to Joe Solo mon in the 177-pound class. Beres ford has won four straight, while Solomon has' a 5-2-1 record. Solo mon has 'wrestled in the 167 and 177-pound classes. His ,father had told him, with some understatement, that he was illogical. He refused to squire a pretty girl to a dance because her name was June Betz and he was against gambling. He wouldn't eat avocados because they were also called "alligator pears" and he didn't like alligators. In addition, he was a slob. Some of the men in his dorm tried to talk to him. "Look at that shirt," they said. "The material's cheesy Why don't you hop down and get a Van Heusen Oxfordian ...it's soft, fine oxford cloth." "I'm not attending Oxford. I'm attending Old Siwash," answered our boy. "But, look, Buster. This oxford cloth is woven tighter so it'll last longer. It's a. smart investment. And it only costs $4.50." "So who needs it? I might get hit by a thick. Then what good would it be?" quoth Buster. "What about your collar? Flat as a pancake! Don't you want a good-looking button-down with that famous Van Heusen relaxed-roll?" one asked. "I got nothing against pancakes. I hate rolls." Note: Our man flunked' Logic post haste, and was drafted. The Army has him classified under "Secret Weapons." Raschi Expects 20 Wins With Cards This Year ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (4?)
