THE DAILY COLLEGIAN. STATE COLLEGE. PENNSYLVANIA
By ANN LEH
While coeds are busy worrying
about gowns to wear to the an
nual Military Ball tomorrow night
in Recreation Hall, members of
the four military honor societies
on campus, co-sponsors of the
dance, have their ■ problems, too.
All behind the scenes prepara
tions for the ball are in their
hands, and Friday night, while
the dance is in progress, Scab
bard and Blade, Quarterdeck So
ciety, Pershing Rifles, and Arnold
Air Society members will be
working as ushers and as mem
bers of the honor guard for the
queen. Pledges of Pershing Rifles
will be operating the checkroom.
The first military society ap
peared on campus in 1903 when
a chapter of Scabbard and Blade
was founded. Today Scabbard and
Blade is composed of 50—men,
with members chosen each se
mester from advanced ROTC stu
dents.
Founded at Wisconsin
Scabbard and Blade was found
ed late in the 19th century at the
University of Wisconsin.
At the University, Scabbard
and Blade takes part in special
Memorial and Armistice Day pro
grams.
Pershing Rifles, the only other
military society embracing all
three services was founded on
campus in 1932.
The Honor Society of Pershing
Rifles, as it is officially known,
was founded in 1894 at the Uni
versity of'Nebraska by Lt. John
J. Pershing. It was first known
as Varsity Rifles, with the new
name being adopted when its
founder came into prominence.
In Drill Competition
Each spring the Pershing Rifles
Drill team takes part in intra
regimental drill competition, hav
ing copped the standard drill title
in 1951.
Quarterdeck Society is a local
organization open to Navy ROTC
midshipmen with a 1 All-Uni
versity average and a 3.0 (75 per
cent) naval aptitude rating.
