TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1953 Hoilert 3d, Smith sth; Lions Fail In Title Bid; Panthers 2d (Continued from page one) Michigan State runners earlier in the season, 25-30. The big three for the Spartans this season have been Lyle Garbe, John Cook and Ronnie Barr. The comment made by Werner on Friday when he learned of the Big 10 victory by Michigan State now seems very prophetic. He said at the time that “Michi gan State probably will be fav ored to win the meet now. And what’s more, I wouldn’t be sur prised to see them do it.” More than 200 hill-and-dalers from 37 colleges competed for in dividual honors. The race began at 3 p.m. and quickly developed into a three-team contest between Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Penn State. Pittsburgh entered the cham pionship battle with an unde feated record for the season. They were not considered seriously be cause they had not raced against any tough competition this year. However, Werner recognized the potential of the Panthers earlier in the week and said that he held great respect for the Smokey City harriers. During the regular season the Blue and White also posted a spotless slate, winning dual meets from Cornell, Michigan State and Manhattan and a triangular meet from Navy and George town. A three-mile championship race for freshmen was also held at Van Cortlandt Park yesterday. Bob Lippemiere of Georgetown won the race with a clocking of 14:43.2. On Monday the Nittany hill and-dalers will finish the cam pagin when they journey to East Lansing, Mich., for the NCAA ti tle run. Red - Hollen Finishes Third Grid Injury Turns Harris to Soccer Injury of the blood vessels in both his knees while playing football in his sophomore year at Bridgeville High School turned Red Harris’ attention from football to soccer. He is now Coach Ken Hosterman’s goalie. Harris was first spotted along with Bill Norcik and Emil Borra, present Lion soccermen, by Coach Bill Jeffrey during the "Western Pennsylvania Soccer Champion ship game between Bridgeville and South Fayette. The one hundred and seventy-pound goalie, along with his two team mates, accepted Jeffrey’s bid to Penn State after the game. After playing football and soc cer for two years, and basketball for three in high school, Harris came to State destined to become the Lion net keeper for four years The red-headed senior said, “Al though Bill never played goalie, he helped me several times by pointing out my mistakes in his usual jovial manner.” Harris, who is a major in the advance Air Force ROTC pro gram, said that his biggest thrills at Penn State during the past years were the shutouts which he helped post against opposing teams. With one more game to play for the Nittany soccer squad, he has ten shutouts to his credit for three years of varsity ball. Red said, “Hap and Emil greatly aided our defense this year - , and Paul -Dierks has continued his outstanding work from last year.” After three years under “Mr. Soccer,” Harris said that Jeffrey was able to handle players very well. “Ken Hosterman has step ped into the shoes of Jeffrey like a veteran coach,” Harris said. After losing to a sensational squad from Temple oh Saturday, 2-0, Harris said that Temple played exceptionally good ball. He said “Temple deserved to win that game, but I think we could have played much better. We didn’t play nearly as well as we did against Duke two weeks ago. Our offensive unit just couldn’t get rolling.” LOST CLASS RING, University of Massachu setts, near Mechanical Engineering. Call State College 3388.
