§, I 4TR 6 -1"! §ERTENIM 11, 1953 Freshmen Must Enroll in ROTC Penn State, like every other land grant college, must provide a Resprye Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program to train leaders for national emergencies. Enrollment in four semesters in one of three units is required of all physically fit male students. Three units offered at Penn State are Army, Navy, and Air Force ROTC. The length of time a student must serve after graduation is the greatest difference between the Test Required Army and Air Force cadets must serve two years in basic classes, with two year,s of advanc ed training optional to students accepted in advanced programs. Navy cadets must serve in a four year advanced course, which must be completed once started. To get into Naval ROTC a stu dent must either take a national test before he arrives on campus or must apply for admission to the program no later than the third day of Orientation Week. In the first case, he becomes a regu lar cadet, and in the second he enters the program under contract status. Receive Pay A contract cadet may be, pro moted to regular cadet by exami nation after the program gets underv.ray. Naval. contract cadets, like Ar my and Air Force cadets receive 90 cents a day subsistance pay for senior years, plus extra pay for summer duty. Regular Naval stu dents receive a monthly tuition and books for all four years at the College. • Naval cadets must take three summer• cruises before they are graduated. Army and Air Force cadets must take a four to six week training period between their junior and senior years. Upon graduation, naval regu lars become ensigns in the U. S. Navy, while contract men become ensignz in the naval reserve.. Ar- Tny and Air Force advanced ca dets become second lieutenants in their reserve organizations. Archaeology Courses Three new three-credit archae olgy courses are being offered at the College this year. Dr. Frederick R. ALLEN STREET Student 3 Groups Tap Honor Students Three scholastic honoraries on campus are Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa. These honoraries choose members on the basis of individual schol a.stic averages. Phi Eta Sigma is a freshman men's scholastic honorary. Mem bers are chosen from first, sec-- Ond. and third semester students ' with an All-College average of 2.5. The honorary holds two initia tion meetings a year. ' Phi Kappa Phi, All-College senior scholastic honorary, chonses members from all Schools. Re quirements are an All-College av erage of 2.55. Students are tapped in their seventh semester. - 'Phi Kappa Phi awards a $5O scholar ship each year to a freshman stu dent. Phi Beta Kappa, national bon brary, elects members from' grad uating •seniors with a 2.5 All-Col lege average and students in the upper tenth of graduating classes. The initiation ceremony is held at the end of the scholastic year at an annual banquet. Supplies , Women's Honorary Founded in 1947 Covens, sophomore women's ac tivities honorary, was established in 1947. Officers are Jean Yemm, pres ident; Ann Lederman, .vice pres ident; Roberta Sankey, secretary; and Sara McKnight, treasurer. Cwens taps freshman women active in at least two 'major' ac tivities whO have an All-College average of 1.5 or better. Annual projects of Cwens are the Thingaree Drag, held in the early fall, and serving as fresh men dormitory counselors. Cwens supports a Dutch war oiphan with proceeds from activities. Only journalism and music classes are conducted outside of Sparks, in Carnegie Hall. Liberal arts was looked upon not too many years ago as a mis placed course for college. Classes were held in buildings scattered all over campus and funds and general support were lacking. Sparks was named in honor of Edwin Erle Sparks, former presi dent of the College.
