PAGE EIGHT 'Barbara` (Continued from page one) play opens he is expected at their home. When Undershaft meets Bar his daughter, for both are dy bara he is instantly attracted to namic persons with strong ideals. Their philosophies are miles apart, however, and thus they set about to convert each other. It is Undershaft's belief that the greatest evil and worst of crimes is poverty. "Leave it to the poor to pretend that poverty is a blessing; leave it to the coward to make a religion of his co ward i c e by preaching hum il it y," he says. Money and gunpowder are neces sary to salvation, he maintains, for without those man can't afford honor, justice, and truth. Barbara's religion, however, is one of pity and humility, and she lives it vehemently until she dis covers that the Salvation Army's very existence is dependent on money from distillers and muni tion-makers—the very industries which are producing the evil the Army is trying to stamp _out. Barbara refuses her father's offer of 100 pounds, however, because she wants him to give up manufacturing wea pons and be' "saved" rather than "buy" an easy conscience. But the Army, attaching more impor tance to the power his money will give to save many souls, accepts it. Barbara, desolate, takes off her uniform and loses her belief in a God of humility. When, in the last act, Barbara and her family visit the munitions works at Perivale St. Andrews, they find it is a prosperous place where everyone is well-fed and clad. But the people are filled with oppression, vulgarity, and snobbery. Barbara decides to spend her life fighting this spirit and rejoices that she will never again know that her truths are listened to because she gives alms at the same time. "I have got rid of the bribe of bread .. . Let God's work be done for its own sake," she says. Faith in God is a requisite to right living. Knowing God - as our Creator and Benefactor buttresses man for the trials and temptations of life. Faith in our fellowmen is necessary in our complex social arid econ'mic life. Every man is to be trusted until proven unworthy of our confidence. Faith in one's self provides the "drive" that allows one to climb the ladder of success. The man who lacks self-confidence will not inspir it in others. The antics of Norman Alpert's Snobby Price, a loafer of tongue , in-cheek piety who claims to be "saved" for the price of a meal and says he no longer breaks win dows because "the windows of heaven" are open to him, are tre mendous; Adolphus Cusins, played by Myron Cole, certainly has the Shaw flavor. The play has a wonderful warmth •as a result of the acting of April Heinsohn, in the role of Major Barbara. She seems a very vital person at the same time as she maintains a certain dignity. Andrew Undershaft, - Shaw 's spokesman, is excellently por trayed by Richard Andersen.
