dollars a biennium, the report
added.
The committee pointed out that,
although - the state subsidized the
teachers' colleges, each year thou
sands of graduates do not go into
teaching. The report suggested a
plan whereby graduates be re
quired to teach for a minimum
time or reimburse the state for
the cost of. their education.
The committee also offered sug
gestions for what it called more
equitable and efficient distribu
tion of state subsidies to schools.
It noted that if present spending
continues at the rate shown by
the past ten years, the state would
have to increase its grants to
488 million dollars by 1960. At
present the state grants 286 mil
lion.

CONFERENCE IN THE CLOUDS
Among the undergraduates on any college campus, you'll find
the talk reaching up to the clouds. And once in a While in a class
room, around a study table, or even in a bull session —4 really big
idea is born.
Big ideas come, too, from the men and women in laboratories,
business offices, shops. But often these professionals are exploring
a path first glimpsed in college.
How do we know? Because of the many college people 'Who
have come into the Bell System, where big ideas and a lot of dreams
have taken their place in progress. The human voice,' carried along
a wire, first across a town, then a state, a nation; and now the world.
Music and pictures and things happening delivered into cities and
hamlets all across the land •by radio and television networks.
We're always looking for the men and women who "get big
ideas—whether they're about people, or machines, or ways of doing
things. Your Placement Officer can give you details about oppor
tunities for employment in the Bell' System.
