PAGE EIGHT Notre Dame Chemist To Discuss World Order Dr. Charles C. Price, head of the Department of Chemistry at Notre Dame University and Democratic. candidate for representative in Congress, will lecture on "Somos or Chaos—A Scientist Views World Order," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in 105 Mechanical Engineering. The lecture will be sponsored by the Liberal Arts committee on international understanding .and the International Relations Club. Dr. Price was graduated from Swarthmore College with high honors, and received both a Mas ter of Arts and Doctor of Chem istry degree at Harvard Univer sity. In addition to serving as head of the Chemistry department at Notre Dame, Dr. Price was di rector of the Office of Scientific Research and Development Pro jects on Chemical Warfare and Drugs and• Malaria. He is also chairman of the University Re search Committee at Notre Dame. Dr. Price is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Ad vancement of Science, National Science Foundation, and several other scientific organizations. He is the author of several text books and articles on world fed eration. Debaters - (Continued from page one) side for team "A" will be Ran dolph Wertz and Thomas Davies. Affirmative team "B" is composed of Philip Greenberg and Burton Triester. Debating negatively for team "B" will be Donald Prip stein and Charles Bryson. Joseph F. O'Brien, professor of public speaking, and men's coach, will travel with them. Representing the women's squad on one team will be Nancy Silver man and Charlotte Kagan on the affirmative and Louise Justin and Dorothy Osterhout on the nega tive. Andrey Austin and Barbara Kaufman will take the affirma tive on the other team and Joanne Montgomery and Barbara Binger the negative. William W. Hamil ton, assistant professor of speech, will accompany th e women's teams. There is a possibility that the men's and women's teams may face each other at the novice tournament, a ccor ding to Jay Headly, men's squad manager. This is possible since teams reg ister separately for competition and competing teams are chosen by draw. Luyben, Janssens Win Story Awards Helen • Luyben, fifth semester journalism major, and Corinne Janssens, fifth semester arts and letters major, received cash awards recently for their win ning stories in the News and Views short-story contest. The theme of the contest was the Christmas season. Miss Luyben was awarded first prize of $lO for her story, "A New Year," and Miss Janssens received the $5 second prize for "Home for Christmas." Nancy, Gemmill, acting editor of News and Views, made the awards. The next issue of News and Views will be on sale Tues day for 10 cents. 'Farmer' Wins Honors In Publication Contest The Penn State Farmer, Fores ter and Scientist was awarded third place in a general excellence contest among college agricultur al magazines, Theodore Kimmel, managing editor, has announced. The contest was sponsored by the Agricultural College Maga zine Association, which awarded the prize at its recent convention in Chicago. Sheep Win in Show Penn State sheep entered in the breeding classes of the 53d International Livestock Expo sition in Chicago this week took first place and .reserve cham pion ewe honors. A "pen of three" Southdown ewe lambs won first prize at the show. Scarab President Named A. William Hajjar, associate professor of architecture, was named nati o n a l president of Scrab, honorary architectural fra ternity, at a recent meeting in State College. Student Wins Cash Award Floyd Jamison, first semester mechanical engineering ma j or, has received a cash award and certificate of commendation for the perfection of a feather test ing method now being used by the Army. Jamison, former employee in the research and development lab oratories, Philadelphia Quarter master Depot, perfected a method of determining' the filling power of feathers in the production of pillows and sleeping bags used by the Armed Forces. The award was presented by the depot's commanding officer, Brig. Gen. Richard B. Thornton, in behalf of the efficiency award committee. The committee pointed out that, although - the state subsidized the teachers' colleges, each year thou sands of graduates do not go into teaching. The report suggested a plan whereby graduates be re quired to teach for a minimum time or reimburse the state for the cost of. their education. The committee also offered sug gestions for what it called more equitable and efficient distribu tion of state subsidies to schools. It noted that if present spending continues at the rate shown by the past ten years, the state would have to increase its grants to 488 million dollars by 1960.
