PAGE SIX Upset Chances Lie with Lions' Rebound Ability Coach Elmer Gross believes Penn State's chances to upset de fending champion Kentucky in the NCAA basketball tourney at Raleigh, N.C., Friday night depends on the Lions' ability to re bound against the Wildcats. Coach Adolph Rupp's squad department. Paced by their cente Frank Ramsey, the Wildcats cap tured the ball 1722 times off the boards against 1088 for the op position. Hagan was the indivi dual leader with 499 rebounds. Hagan, Ramsey •and Bobby Watson spearheaded the Wild cats' great scoring attack which netted them about 88 points 'per game. The Kentuckians rolled up a 28-2 record to rank number one in the nation. Their only losses were to St. Louis and Min nesota. 3 Out of 4 Last season Rupp's courtmen walloped Louisville and St. Johns to advance to the Eastern finals. They edged Illinois, 76-74 for the Eastern title, then trounced . Kan sas State, 68-58, for the national championship. Last year's national crown marked the third time in, the past four that Kentucky has won the honor. They reached the top in 1948 and '49. All three years they were voted the leading col legiate quintet by the country's sportswriters. Beaten by Champs Against this impressive array, Gross will send probably the best outfit, in State history. The Lions finished with 20-4, best in the school's record, and are the sec ond Nittany team to play in NCAA competition. The other time was at the com pletion of the 1941-42 season. The Lions finished with a 'l7-2 mark and received a bid to the Eastern playoffs in New Orleans. After losing to Dartmouth, eventual Eastern champs, they upset Illin ois in a consolation game. Gross was co-captain, and John Egli, assistant coach, a regular on that team. Snapped Streak Paced by freshman Jesse Ar nelle, the Lions broke almost every cage record available this season. Most notable achieve ments were the 15 game winning streak and two triumphs over highly-rated West Virginia. The team's only slump of the year vas successive losses to Penn, Colgate, and Syracuse. The Quaker loss snapped the winning streak and sent the Grossmen into an abbreviated tailspin. They managed - to snap out of the dold rums with victories over the Mountaineers, Pitt and Bucknell to complete the most successful season in Blue and White an nals. Arnelle smashed Lou Lamie's one-year scoring record of 319 pbints by totaling 448 in his first year of collegiate competition. The Lions' Cronstedt Will Compete In Gym NC • A's Friday Jan Cronstedt will carry Penn State's gymnastic hopes into battle when the annual NCAA gymnastic tournament opens Friday in Boulder, Colo. Preliminaries will start at 2 p.m. Friday with the ten highest scorers in each event qualifying for the finals Saturday. Cronstedt will be entered , in the all-around event which, unlike the all-around competition in the EIGA tourney, features two ad ditional events in calisthenics and the long-horse jump. In the long-horse jump, the competitor dives over a side horse that has no handles. • In addition to the long-horse jump and the calisthenics, the all-around competition features the horizOntal- bar, the parallel bars, the flying rings, and the sidehorse. Cronstedt's best events are the horizontal bar and the parallel bars, but the blonde-haired fresh man came through in true champ ionship form in the EIGA's at Syracuse to win the all-around from the likes of such men as ( Johnny Barkal, Syracuse, and John Jengo, Temple. Cronstedt, however, will un doubtedly face his toughest com petition of the year in the NCAA's. Expected to give the Flying Finn his close moments are Bob Sullivan, Illinois; Bob Feldmeier, Michigan State; and Carmen Reg na and Don Holder, Florida State, defending team champions. Sullivan recently won . the Big Ten all-around title and went a long way in contributing to Illin ois' team victory in the Big 10 championships at Bloomington, Ind. Illinois, unbeaten in dual meet competition, until Michigan State turned the trick this year, won with 931/2 points while second place Michigan State garnered 84% . Feldmeier finished second to Sullivan even though he tore his shoulder muscles on the last day of practice. Feldmeier scored 32 of Michigan State's 84 1 / 2 ,points. Carl Rintz, a Quarryville, Pa. freshman, accounted for another 251/2. In addition, Cronstedt will prob ably face the best the East has to offer, including Barkal and Milan Trnka, Syracuse. Barkal grabbed three second places in the dual meet here. A new all-around titlist will be crowned, however, in this special ty as Bill Roetzheim, defending title holder from Florida State, has graduated. Preps for Army . . Castellani subs for undefeated Johnny Saxton, who originally had been scheduled to face Brat ton.
