PAGE TEN The Lion's Lair In all the plans offered recently for the de-emphasis of college athletics and especially football, there has been a clause stipulating that a rigid scholastic standard must be maintained and that there should be no exceptions for athletes. The Nittany Lion cagers have come out of oblivion after a 14-10 record last season—posted one of the finest records in the country, and are currently pushing their way into a spot among the top twenty basketball teams in 'the nation. True, the Lions haven’t played the toughest schedule in the coun try but that’s no fault of theirs. Outside of W&J they’ve turned back all comers, including West Virginia, Syracuse, Colgate, Mich igan, and Navy. And one of the amazing facts about the 13-1 record the Lions have compiled is the number of games they've won away from home. In the past, away games have dealt a death blow to any hopes for a great season, but so far this season. Gross' men have cap tured eight out of nine contests away from the friendly coniines of Rec Hall. He put them ahead once more, 39-37, after McMahan had deadlocked the count at 37. Sledzik, playing one of his best games of the season, drove in to tie the score again, but Isner con nected from the side to scramble it once more. Ed Haag dipped in a pair from the foul line to make things even and State pulled ahead, 43-41, for the first time since early in the second stanza when McMahan tipped one in with 2 minutes left in the period. But the Penn State lead was short-lived as Eddie Becker tossed in two fouls and Isner grabbed a tap in shot to put West Virginia back in command, 45-43, at the close of the third, period. Sledzik converted a free throw and Williams a three-point layup as State surged ahead 47-45. Is ner clicked again from the out side to tie it, but Sherry put State ahead, 49-47, with a layup. Workman and McMahan each cashed in on a pair of foul tries to maintain the status quo. and Arnelle gave State its biggest second-half edge—s3-49—with a jump shot. Lions Lead Early Becker cut the margin by two with a set shot and Isner cut off another point with a free throw. Moore hit with another set shot to restore West Virginia to the lead, 54-53, and set the stage for the furious final four minutes. State surprised by jumping out to an early lead. With Sledzik, Williams, and Arnelle hitting, the Lions moved out in front, 8-2, in the first five minutes of action. They ran it up to 15-8 and 17-10, and were ahead 19-14 at the quar ter. Failure to score during the first five minutes of the second period cost the Lions the lead as the Mountaineers moved ahead 21-19. Piorkowski’s layup knotted the count, but with State unable to control either board, West Vir ginia moved ahead 32-27 in the final minues of the' first half.
