WEDNESDAY;' DE,CEMEi?ER.:§; 1951 Thompson A Ends Losing Streak, 18-18 In the first major upset in the WRA basketball season Thomp son A ended a fiiie game losing streak by tying league leader, Gamma Phi ' Beta, 18-18. After trailing almost the en tire game, the Thompson squad tied it up with Elaine Focht sink ing a foul shot in the final min ute of play. This tie for the Gam ma Phi's meant the loss of the league title. They had previously shared the league lead with Al pha Omicron Pi. With Delta Del ta Delta forfeiting to Alpha Omi cron Pi, ...the League IV title au tomatically goes to the A 0 Pi's. The League 111 title went to Kappa Delta as it handed a sound trouncing to Delta Zeta, 44-25. Margo Mullin was high scorer for both the winners and the evening with 19 tallies. Genie Deger paced Zeta Tau Alpha to a 35-13 victory over Delta Gam ma with her 16 points. Alpha Xi Delta ' swept all its table tennis matches from Kappa Alpha Theta. Theta Phi Alpha bowed to Alpha Epsilon Phi and Co-op dropped its matches. to Beta Sigma Omicron. Phi Mu took Phi Sigma Sigma and Chi Omega overtook Kappa Kappa Gamma. Lima- to Address Language Group Dr. Alceu Amoroso Lima, • di rector of the Department of Cul tural Relations of the Pan-Amer ican Union, will speak 'at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Phi Kappa frater nity. • His lecture, on the "Evolution of Literary Criticism in Brazil," is sponsored by Phi Sigma lota, romance language honor frater nity, and the Department of Ro mance Languages. It is open to the public. • Dr. Lima is one of the leading literary historians of Brazil. His lecture w ill commemorate the centenary of the birth of Silvio Romero, Brazilian literary critie. The five finalists Were chosen by the ROTC staff at Virginia Military Institute. Those selected from the 17 photographs sent to the institute are Joan Brown, Patricia Day, Joan Deeg, Katherine Nicoll, and Mary Oehlschlager. Miss Oehl schlager is the only candidate not attending the College. During intermission at th e dance, the finalists will be es corted to the bandstand by an honor guard from Pershing Rifles, Prop and Wing, Scabbard and Blade, and the Quarterdeck So ciety. Cadet Col. Jack Enterline, Air ROTC, will be master of ceremonies and will introduce the candidates. Rip Engle, head foot ball coach, will crown the queen. Three Judges Each finalist will receive a bouquet of red roses and a rhine stone necklace, bracelet, and carrying set. In addition the queen will receive a silver crown en graved with the emblems of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Judges who will select the queen are Lt. Col. Jack ,Dieterle, professor of air science and tac tics, Col. Lucien Bolduc, profes sor of military science and tactics, and Capt. 'John Woodbury, pro fessor of naval science and tactics.. Only ROTC cadets and midship men were permitted to submit photographs of candidates fo r queen. The Associated Press reported that the merry o 1 d gentleman didn't have enough postage to an swer the baglOads of letters he's been receiving. This deplorable situation came to the attention of the budgetary committee of the Danish parlia ment. A special meeting was called in Copenhagen to deal with Santa's plight. Th e parliamentarians unani mously decided to appropriate a special grant to Santa Claus. He will get 55,000 kron e r, about $B4OO, to help him answer his mail. Santa's main mail station is.lo cated in • Greenland, Denmark's Arctic colony near the North Pole. All his mail is sent via the Royal Danish Greenland Admin istration, in Copenhagen. Here Santa's helpers handled 130,000 letters from boys and girls all over the world last year. This year Santa expects 200,- 000 letters via this route. lie plans to answer each letter and enclose a picture from Greenland and a pamphlet of children's stor ies by Hans Christian Andersen. Council Reads Constitution Changes Three proposed changes of the constitution of the Engineering Student Council were read' for the second of three times at the coun cil meeting last night. Course rating, which will take place after Chirstmas in the En gineering school, and the possi bility, of a mixer in January or February, were discussed.
