The spirited Lions, who had their sights set on the season’s biggest upset, just couldn’t keep pace with the seemingly endless stream of fresh talented reserves the Spartans had and they went down to their second defeat of the year, 32-21 A record crowd of 30,684 saw the Lions spot the Michigan . gridders 13 points in the first quarter only to come roaring, back to take a 14-13 lead early in the second half. After Bob Pollard’s brilliant runback of a Michigan punt which put Penn State in, a temporary lead, the record] Homecoming crowd sensed an up set over the nation’s third rank ing team. But a wealth of offen sive backs, which helped to run up 303 yards on the ground, just wore the Lions down, scoring twice in the third quarter and once more in the final period, Score 21 Coach Rip Engle’s gridders lost no prestige in losing to the Spar tans. The Lions ran up 21 points against the tough Spartan defense —something no other team has been able to do this year. Offensively, it was Matt Yan osich, Bob Pollard, and Tony Rados who stood out for the Lions. Yanosich scored the first Lion TD and picked up 43 of Penn State’s 67 yard rushing total. Pollard made a beautiful 65 yard runback of a ,Spartan punt for the second Penn State score while Rados passed for one TD and set up another one. On the defense, guard Pete Schoderbek, ends Dave Simon and Jesse Arnelle, and halfback Keith Vesling played good games. Two Quick Scores ' In the first quarter, the Spar tans looked like they might make the game a runaway when they turned two Penn State fumbles into touchdowns and took a 13-0 lead over the underdog Lions. Bob Carey kicked off to the Lions to start the game but on the first play from scrimmage, Ted Shattuck fumbled the ball and Bill Horrell recovered for Michigan State on the State 25 ; yard line. Shattuck picked up a first down in two plays but Shopa, after gaining 14 yards on the next play, fumbled and Bill Hughes re covered for the Spartans on his own 47. With Pisano and McAuliffe carrying, the Spartans piut to gether three first downs to the Lion ten yard line. On the third down, McAuliffe went' over right tackle from the three for -the score.' Carey’s kick was wide and Michigan State led, 13-0. - • Lions Score An exchange of kicks found Penn State in possession on the MS 41. Jim Pollard picked up five to the 36. On the next play, Tony Rados hit Matt Yanosich with a pass on the three yard line. Jim Ellis pulled , him down on the one. Yanosich went over left guard for the score. Bill Leonard’s kick was good and the score stood at 13-7. / The Lions jumped : into the lead shortly after the second half got under way. F^NNsIIVANIA Sportswriters Increase Lead Over Gridders The sportswriters defeated the football team’s representative for the fifth successive week and in creased their lead over the grid ders in the Daily Collegian’s foot ball selections contest this week. The three writers tied for first with nine correct and six wrong. Offensive guard Len Bartek had eight right and seven wrong for the football team. Many upsets gave the fore casters their worst week of the season. All of the predicters missed Arkansas over Texas, Southern California over Cali fornia, Indiana over Ohio State, and Texas A&M over Texas. Three missed Kentucky’s victory over Villanova and Rice’s upset of Southern Methodist. The sportswriters combined average is .651, while the football team has .573. Assistant sports editor Bob Vosburg still leads individually with a .676 mark. Sports editor Ernie Moore follows with .647, and Dave Colton, assist ant sports editor, has .632. A 45-yard Skip Rebele to John Bristor desperation TD heave with a scant two minutes left in the final half gave Phi Gamma Delta an 18-12 decision over Beta Sigma Rho in another second round IM contest. The two fraternities matched score for score, with the Beta Sig’s coming from behind to. knot the game both times. 4 Time ran out with the ball in Beta Sig’s possession on the Phi Gam .20 yard line. An 80-yard scoring play mid way in the first half proved to be the only tally in the Dorm 33—Penn State Club game. The score was 6-0. Dave Zebley uncorked a long, looping aerial to sleeper Carl Shaner for the winning Dorm 33 marker. Neither team threatened in the final half. A lone Phi Delta Theta first half score and a very tight de fense outweighted and outlasted the continuous Sigma Phi Epsilon threats in the final • fraternity game last night. The result was another 6-0 decision. Bob Bowers, Jim Fink, and Fred Huston put together a 41 yard scoring play in the initial period.
