PAGE TWO Gross Announces Policy For Student Deferments GROSS ANNOUNCES .. me A policy on student deferments has been issued to Selective Serv jce Local Boards in Pennsylvania by Henry M. Gross, State three tor of Selective Service. Gross explains that persons de ;re r r e d by reason of pursuing courses of study in colleges will „remain liable for induction for ...training and service until they _,l3ecome 35' years of age. The general policy, as outlined ifi the directive, follows: It is desirable that' deferment 'of all college students receive 'equitable consideration by all "local boards irrespective of ;. - Course of study. In order to main 'lain uniform classification,' local hoards should not grant a stu-1 dent deferment unless eligibility is clearly established. 11-A (S) Classification When the student meets the . ;. requirements of the regulations he may be placed in class 11-A (S). After the scholastic year "commences, local boards should "..take steps to be certain that the stpdent is acutally in attendance ;at the college. .;; During the past year, nation approximately 700,000 stu •dents had their inductions post poned. It is expected that the present procedure to qualify stu 'dents will eliminate 200,000, leav arg approximately 500,000 to be considered for deferment during ;the corning year. This is a com paratively small number con !sidering the total registration of over 11,000,000. Student in sth or 6th year of 5-6 year course, upper three fourths elf class or 70. Studer; in 4th year, completed 3 years, upper three-fourths of Class or 70. Student in 3d year, completed 2 years, upper two-thirds of class or 70. Student in 2d year, completed Students Return to College TEXT - BOOKS 1 year, upper one-half of class or 70. Students •of healing arts, 'in professional colleges, must be certified on Form 103 direct from college to local boards. No test score required. Summary of Procedure: A. Certification of scholastic standing must be furnished by the college. B. Th e College Qualification Test is optional and not a re quirement. C. Each student registrant must be granted an original de ferment as a •student if he has entered upon an academic year prior to the date of induction. ' D. Persons , who have been postponed, or defred because of attendance at schools and col leges, will now be considered un der the regulations. If not eligible for continued deferment under the present criteria, such a regis trant may be inducted when reached in sequence regardless of his presence' in college at that time. E. In order to afford students, who may be considered for oc cupational deferment under. the new criteria, the opportunity to furnish , their local boards with the necessary evidence of their scholastic standing or their test scores in the College Qualifi cation Test, the issuance of an order to report for induction, or the induction of any such stu dent will be postponed pending receipt of such information but in no case latpr than August 20, 1951. Classification Reconsidered F.
