PAGE EIGHT ' Contest Registration Will Begin Today Registration for all students entering the annual John Henry FT izzell Extempore Speaking Contest will take place at 7 p.m. to day in 121 Sparks. All undergraduates, except previous prize win ners, are eligible. At this meeting each entrant must select a topic from lists pro vided, or may choose a topic of his own subject to the approval of the committee, in charge. Members of the debate squads will not be permitted to use de bate topics or other forensic con test topics in either the elimina tions or the finals Each contestant will speak for five minutes without notes in the eliminations next Thursday. Finalists will speak for eight to ten minutes without notes May 28. The winner will receive the Pennsylvania State College prize of $5O and the John Henry Friz zell award of merit in extempor aneous speaking. The Forensic Council prize of $25 and the Friz zell award of merit will go to the runner-up. The Frizzell speaking contest is more than a half-century old. Originally known as the Junior Oratorical Contest, it later be came the Sophomore Extempor aneous Speaking Contest. It is now run as an annual contest in honor of John Henry Frizzell, the first head of the Department of Speech, who retired with emer itus rank June 30, 1946 after nearly 45 years of teaching.
