.THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1950 Lion Cross-Country Team Wins Natl Title Harriers Edge Spartans To Capture NCAA Toga Penn State’s cross-country team smashed all disbelief that it wasn’t the best team in the nation Monday when the Lions added the NCAA cross-country championship to their collection, making it a clean sweep of collegiate cross-country laurels. The Lions turned back an in spired Michigan State team which came within 2 points of tying the Nittanies in the NCAA meet at East Lansing, Mich. The score was '53 to 55. Toughest Meet It was the closest and toughest meet of the season for Coach Chick Werner’s undefeated har riers who had to brave a 25 de gree temperature and the best cross-country teams in the nation to cop the title. But it was the team strength of the Lions which finally paid off as five Lion scorers finished among the first 22. Once again it was Bill Ashen felter who paced the Lion har riers to victory. Lanky Ash loped over the four mile course in 21:- 05.0 to cop Bth place. Shea Fades Herb Semper of .Kansas won in dividual honors turning in a 20:- 31.7, while pre-meet favorjte, Dick Shea of Army, faded badly and finished in 27th place with a time of 21:55.0. The second Lion scorer to cross the finish line was Bob Freebairn who turned in a time of 21:12.0 to place ilth. The other Nittany scorers were Jack St. Clair, Bill Gorgon, Dudley Foster, and Don Ashenfelter. Marion Named Card Manager Marty “Slats” Marion, “Mr. Shortstop’’ of baseball, has been named as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, Fred Saigh, owner of the club, announced yesterday. The ann'ouncement by Saigh came on the heels of the an nouncement yesterday that Chuck Dressen had been named mana ger of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Dressen will succeed Bert Shot ten as boss man of the Dodgers. Last year the Cardinals finished in fifth place while the Dodgers finished second. College Avenue Five Victories, Six Forfeits Open IM Boxing The seal was broken on an other intramural boxing season last night before a crowd of about 300 in Rec hall. Five men battled their way to victory, while six others won for feited bouts. In three matches both opponents failed to show up, and were automatically dropped from further competition. In the evening’s opening battle, lanky Dick Boerlin, of Delta Sig ma Phi, won a decision from Clarence Lozaw, of Delta Tau Delta. Boerlin had a decided reach advantage over his shorter opponent, and kept the hugkv Lozaw at bay with a long left hand. Both boys weighed in at 175 pounds. Edwards Wins Dick Edwards, of Delta Chi, whipped Bob Ward, fighting for Theta Kappa Phi, in a 145-pound go. It was a wild bout that saw Edwards, who brought his punch es from the hip—western style, stun his opponent several times with ripping hay-makers. In a free-swinging 145-pound setto, Jim Darcy, of Phi Kappa Psi, took the measure of former All- American soccerman Dick Han nah, of Pi Kappa Alpha. It was a solid fight all the way, and the best slugging exhibition of the night. It was Darcy’s willingness to carry the fight to Hannah that gained him the judges nod. Rudy Reid, a classy boy fight ing for Omega Psi Phi, copped another 145-pound bout from Jim Shull, Sigma Phi Sigma. The Lions went through a light workout Saturday afternoon under the stands of Pitt stadium, and an indoor drill in the Pittsburgh Athletic Club Sunday. Coach Rip Engle ran the squad through another indoor session Monday afternoon in Rec hall af ter the team returned to State College. Snow plows cleared Beaver field Tuesday and Engle conduct ed a body-contact scrimmage that lasted more than an hour. The team went through an abbreviat ed outdoor session again yester day. Start Clearing Field While Forbes field is not cov ered by a tarpaulin, the protec tion of the grandstands allowed only one foot of snow to deposit. The Steelers, who will play the Washington Redskins there Sun day, began clearing the field yesterday. Bom Florenz Joseph, Jr., in Philadelphia, the sth semester journalism student is especially able to dispense inside infor mation since he is a member of the soccer squad. Soccer Player At North Catholic High School in that city he supple mented his newswriting work with participation on the. soc cer and baseball teams. Bud is a G. I. student and is married. At present the happy look on his face is due to the fact that he is the proud father of a bouncing baby boy. A member of Sigma Pi fra ternity, he joined the Colle gian staff last semester when he covered intramural sports to prepare for varsity assignments this year. Because of his Collegian dut ies and soccer practice every day, Bud doesn’t have much time to himself, but he takes time each day to stop in at Graham’s.
