THUHS.Lit-i x , IN 6 v zivitsztt 9, 1956 Injuries May Bench Four Lion Gridders Free from any major injuries until last week's Boston College Penn State's gridders may be.forced to take the field against West-Nirginia minus the services of four important operatives. Bd.cks 'Paul Anders, Jim Pol . lard„and George Jacob are all troubled with shoulder injuries, and trainer Chuck Medlar will proVably wait until late Friday afternoon before he decides whether the three will see action Saturday. Medlar, however, termed de fensive end Pat McPoland as "pretty doubtful." McPoland suf fered a painful torn finger ten don in practice Tuesday' and will probably have to sit this one out. Should both Pollard and An ders be unable to play, Ceach Rip Engle will probably start Ted Shattuck, his first-string fullback at the start of the season. After a good start, Shattuck cooled' off considerably. The loss of both Anders and Pollard might , hurt the Lion chances considerably.- . While the injuries of Anders and Pollard have been diagnosed as slight shoulder separations, Ja cob, starting defensive safety; is down with a torn shbulder liza - - ment. He is the most likely of the four to miss this week's action. In the meantime, Engle has been working the squad hard' in an effort to polish up the offense —and add a few new twists to the winged-T—as well as ready the pass defense for the aerial on slaught of the Mountaineers. Manhattan's once beaten cross country team is rated as one of the top thinclad outfits in the east. Losing only to a power laden Army team 27-28, and con querors of a strong Syracuse squad, the- Jaspers are capable of snapping the State winning streak at four straight. The match will probably fea ture an individual battle for first place between State's un defeated Bill Ashenfelter and Jasper ace Bill Lucas. Practice started this week on a rather sad note due to the loss suffered on `Monday at the feet of the West Chester State Teach ers. Gradually Coach Bill Jeffrey is bringing the booters up to the pitch that they enjoyed . before their first defeat in 22 games. The lineup will remain nearly the same this week as it was in the past weekend trip. There may be a change at the center forward position however. Jeffrey used six men in this spot during the West Chester contest. A concerted drive will be put on in the remaining three games of the season in an effort to re gain some of the prestige lost on Monday; The Syracuse game on Saturday will be followed by Maryland at home and Temple away on successive weekends.
