From there he went to Brown and in the Spring of 1942 entered the football picture as end coach under Neil “Skip” Stahley, a Penn State almnus who also had come under the influence of Dick Harlow. In ’43 Engle coached the backs and in 1944 was named head coach when Stahley entered the Navy. Succeeds Bedenk At Penn State. Engle will suc ceed Joe Bedenk, who resigned on March 4 after one season at the football helm. (Penn State won 5, lost 4 in 1949). Bedenk, line coach under' Bob Higgins for 20 years, had accepted the top iob the year before when Higgins re signed because of ill health. Hig gins and Bedenk still remain at Penn State, the former as an am bassador of good-will, the latter as baseball coach. Engle is the first non-alumnus to be named to this position since Hugo Bezdek reigned from 1918 to 1929. Higgins, former all- America end at Penn State, suc ceeded Bezdek in 1930 and con tinued as head coach through the 1948 season. Bedenk, also an alumnus, was in charge last year. Next fall, for the first time since 1945, there will be freshmen on the Penn State campus. With the return of a token class, ath letic officials plan to field a fresh man football team, and a sched ule is already in the making.
